Excellent Review

4.55 Chelmsford – OSCAR DOODLE (2pt win – 5/2 generally)

OSCAR DOODLE’s prominent running style is far from ideal for Newcastle where he has lost on five occasions since scraping home by a short head over 1m2f in early January. His only all-weather run away from Gosforth Park this year took place at Chelmsford in May where he landed a 1m2f handicap at 18-1. Brian Ellison’s four-year-old clocked a good time when a front-running third to Roger Varian’s Mathematician at Newcastle on his latest outing and it looks like he could get loose on the lead in this 1m2f classified contest.

6.15 Newcastle – BEECHWOOD STAR (2pt win – 13/2 generally)

BEECHWOOD STAR only made his debut at the start of last month but has managed to earn a ‘talented but frustrating’ tag in a short space of time. He ran an incredible race at Thirsk on his debut, finishing a two-length third despite playing up in the preliminaries, getting mullered by a rival on exiting the stalls and running green from the worst of the draw. He was still green when going down by a head in second place (5-4f) at Ayr next time and probably hit the front too soon when a close-up third from another poor draw over 6f here last time. I had expected him to be gelded after that run but connections reach for the cheekpieces – a positive statistical angle where Richard Fahey horses are concerned – and he looks sure to improve for the extra furlong. He was a general 7-1 shot at the time of writing but I can see him starting as favourite.

6.45 Newcastle – RAY VONN (1pt E/W – 14/1 Bet365, 12/1 generally)

RAY VONN is an eight-race maiden, but the son of Galileo Gold is very consistent, finishing second or third in his last six starts. He only went down by a short head and a nose in third place when 33-1 for a 6f handicap at Newmarket last time – his first run following a wind operation – and he might be able to lead from start to finish here. The three-year-old won’t be inconvenienced by the step back up to 7f – he was third to the now 104-rated Docklands at Kempton when last running at the trip – and the switch to Newcastle could suit. Progeny of his sire are nine from 31 when racing over 7f or further on the Tapeta here and backing them blind would have a returned a huge profit of £148.75 to a £1 level stake at SP (largely thanks to a 125-1 winner earlier this year).
