2.00 Warwick – POLITACUS (2pts win – 7/2 William Hill, 3/1 generally)
I’m surprised that POLITACUS isn’t shorter in the betting for this mares’ novices’ hurdle after her exploits in bumpers. Fergal O’Brien’s five-year-old was especially eyecatching when a 125-1 fifth of 16 to Queens Gamble in a Listed contest at Cheltenham on her second start when ridden very much with the future in mind (her stablemate Bontaay, the 100-30 second favourite, finished as runner-up in that contest). She got off the mark at Ascot on her fourth outing and signed off with a fine 33-1 fourth of 20 to 13-2 stablemate Dysart Enos in Grade 2 company at Aintree. We’ve not seen her jump a hurdle in public, but she looks set for a good season and is worth a good bet.
3.05 Warwick – HOMETIME BOY (1pt win – 6/1 Bet365 + William Hill, 11/2 generally)
The Stuart Edmunds-trained HOMETOWN BOY is reportedly easy to get fit at home and won well in a 2m5f handicap hurdle at Kempton in February 2021 on his first start for 350 days. He followed up at Aintree six weeks later to take his record in jumps handicaps to 12711 (3-5) and could be worth chancing on his chase debut in this novices’ handicap, despite 908-day absence. Since racing resumed after lockdown in June 2020, his trainer is five from 21 with horses returning from a break of 300 days or longer and backing them all would have given us a profit of £17.00 to a £1 level stake at SP.
