There’s plenty of racing on Thursday but it’s mostly modest fare and I’ve spent hours trying to find a bet. I wish I’d started in reverse order, as the only beast I want to back today is THE JACKLER, who goes in the finale at Newbury’s evening meeting. Brian Meehan’s three-year-old bombed out at Newmarket when 50-1 for last month’s handicap debut – finishing last of seven over 1m2f under a front-running ride – but still clocked the second best last-time out speed figure according to Proform, just one spot behind Yellow Lion, who is a general 4-1 shot for this 1m handicap compared to the selection’s 10-1. The Jackler drops from Class 4 to Class 5 level after his six-length reverse at HQ and I’m happy to forgive any horse a defeat on the July Course at the moment, because the surface is verging on disgraceful and it’s a case of ‘random racing’. This year, had we bet any horses who finished fourth or worse on the July Course last time out we’d have won 28 of our 210 bets (13.33%) and made a profit of £18.61 to a £1 level stake at SP (prior to yesterday’s racing). The Jackler will appreciate the cut back to 1m – being by Zoustar I’d also be interested in him over 6f-7f going forward – and he could be in receipt of an easy lead over a course and distance that often favours such tactics.
