As per usual, it was a big advantage to race in the tyre tracks on the far side of the straight course at Redcar on May 29th, favouring those drawn low. George Scott’s gelded newcomer SEVEN QUESTIONS was poorly drawn in stall 13 of 14 (once adjusted for the non-runner) in the 5f Celebration Of Tom Hamilton’s Life EBF Restricted Novice Stakes and missed a beat at the start. The 16-1 shot raced on the outside of the field in mid-division before throwing down a challenge just over a furlong out, keeping on well into fourth. He could never get in a blow at those who raced closer to the favoured rail, coming home two and a half lengths behind previous winner Hala Emaraaty, which was a fantastic effort in the circumstances. Seven Questions’ dam, Get Up And Dance, won at the second time of asking as did her first foal, Boogie Time, and he looks well drawn down the middle in stall 1.
8.40 Yarmouth – MATTY TOO (1pt win – 9/2 Bet365 + 888Sport, 4/1 generally)
Bang in-form Ed Dunlop has won with three of his six first-time visored runners this year (winners at 8-1, 11-2 and 100-30) and MATTY TOO could benefit from the headgear in this 7f handicap on his stable debut. A four-time winner in small fields when with Tim Easterby, the four-year-old finished well beaten at Salisbury last month on his sole start for Ben Pauling but was poorly drawn in stall 11 of 12 on ground slower than preferred. He faces just six rivals today and is well drawn in stall 2 to track pace angles Spanish Mane (stall 1) and Ideal Guest (stall 3).
