Paul Nicholls’ daughter Olive has a seven from 17 record when riding for her old man and backing them blind would have returned a profit of £10.81 to a £1 level stake at SP. She steered HIM MALAYA to a comfortable victory over track and trip last month and could be hard to beat. The four-year-old impressed my when scoring last time as the runner-up and third, though both big prices, came from the Asian Spice race at Exeter that has worked out so well.
DESPEREAUX disappointed at Lingfield last time but took the ‘swamp’ route on the inside rail and it’s safe to draw a line through that. The market looks to have over-reacted and he’s worth a saver.
5.00 Southwell – NOMINAL EVENT (1pt win – 8/1 Paddy Power & William Hill, 15/2 generally)
NOMINAL EVENT has been on my radar since her debut 80-1 third at Chester in mid-September where she fared best of those to come from off the pace after rearing at the start. She was only fourth at Hamilton next time but paid for taking on Esquire at the head of affairs and that one received a handicap mark of 101 after finishing a close second to Purosangue in a York Listed race on her next outing. Nominal Event ran another solid race at Catterick on her latest outing, keeping on from off the pace into second place behind the always-prominent Last Applause and her opening handicap mark of 63 could be on the generous side. Her sire’s three from 108 record on Tapeta is a concern though that improves to three from 24 for those to start at 9-1 or shorter and she’s still worth a small interest.
