2.50 Lingfield – AJRAD (1pt E/W – 11/1 generally)
AJRAD went into my tracker after his 9-1 fourth in the straight 7f turf course here in late May where he did well to finish so close after racing on the slowest part of the track (the ‘golden highway’ was fully operational that day and his stall 1 draw was a big disadvantage). He reportedly finished lame when last of eight over the same course and distance next time and soft ground wouldn’t have helped when sixth of seven on his latest start, again over the straight 7f at Lingfield. He’s back on the 7f all-weather course at Lingfield today – the course and distance of his latest success – and he’s 6lb lower this time around. Throw in Mick Attwater’s good recent form, three winners from his last nine runners at the time of writing, and he looks a good each-way punt.
6.45 Chelmsford – BENACRE (1pt E/W – 12/1 generally)
BENACRE was beaten by 54 lengths when a 28th of 29 in the Britannia Stakes at Royal Ascot but, progressive winner Docklands aside, those drawn high struggled in that race. His stall 27 draw put him at a big disadvantage, and he was eased down with a furlong and a half to go. The high-drawn runners in ninth and 24th – Ramazan and Highbank – both scored at the next time of asking and Charlie Johnston’s colt should be capable of better in this 1m2f Class 3 handicap. The step up in trip should suit the son of Australia, as should the drop in grade – his record below Class 2 level stands at 1211 (3-4). He was an eyecatcher on his latest all-weather assignment, finishing fourth from the front in a Listed contest at Newcastle in a race run to suit those ridden patiently.
