John Ryan’s TENJIN was too free/keen over 1m at Newcastle last time and the 25-1 shot faded to finish a 33-length last of 11. However, the drop back to 7f will suit and the son of Night Of Thunder is bred to appreciate slow turf – a surface he has yet to encounter – and could improve as a result. There’s pace in stalls 1 and 2 from Awtaad Prince and Think Climate and if he can get across and settle behind that pair he could surprise.
3.00 Newmarket – EMPIRESTATEOFMIND (1pt E/W – 8/1 BetUK, 7/1 generally)
The John Quinn-trained EMPIRESTATEOFMIND fared third best of those to race up with the pace when a 12-1 seventh of 22 in the Lincoln on last month’s reappearance and is usually thereabouts given 1m, headgear and good/softer going, recording form figures of 2111231412227 (5-13), with the fourth place coming in a 20-runner handicap at York. He won second-time out last term and the Newmarket track should suit.
5.20 Newmarket – BURNING CASH (1pt win – 16/1 generally)
BURNING CASH has a sound record after a very recent outing (1-21 days ago), recording form figures of 214511 (3-6), improving to 2111 (3-4) below Class 1 level. He was well beaten at Musselburgh ten days ago but that was his first run for several months and it would have been needed. Soft ground is of some concern but there’s compensation in the price and he’s worth a small interest.
