THE HOLLOW GINGE – 1pt win, 888Sport What’s Your Thinking Handicap Chase, Cheltenham 2.05, Saturday, October 22nd (12-1 Unibet, 10-1 Boyelsports, 8-1 William Hill)
First-time out is when to catch THE HOLLOW GINGE and the Nigel Twiston-Davies-trained nine-year-old, second by a head in last year’s renewal of the 888Sports What’s Your Thinking Handicap Chase, can go one better this time. His seasonal debut record over obstacles reads 121U2 (2-5) and that unseat (at the first fence so he effectively didn’t have a run) was followed by a 50-1 placed effort in the Ladbrokes Trophy on what was effectively his first run of the campaign.

TWINING – 0.5pt e/w (20-1 generally)
Jim Boyle is a rare visitor to Yarmouth but he’s done well with horses aged four or younger here this century, scoring with ten of the 84 qualifiers for a profit of £28.63. Plenty of the beaten horses (23 of the 74) also made the frame and it might be worth having a small each-way interest on TWINING. He went into my tracker after his fourth place from off the pace at Chelmsford on his penultimate start where he did best of the closers. He was only ninth at the same venue next time but, again, his come-from-behind style was at a big disadvantage. He’s 0-2 on turf but both runs came on his seasonal debuts (including at 125-1 at Newmarket on his racecourse debut) and this son of Fast Company is bred to appreciate soft going.

TOTHENINES – 1pt e/w (10/1 Paddy Power/BetVictor, 9/1 generally)
TONTHENINES was a big eyecatcher when seventh of 24 in the 6f Ayr Bronze Cup on his penultimate start. That race favoured prominent types and he actually fared best of those to come from off the pace. He placed third over the same course and distance next time when not helped by his stall 1 draw and the return to Tapeta shouldn’t both him. He’s only had one previous all-weather outing, when a respectable non-staying fifth over 7f here.

HOWZAK – 2pts win (11-4 generally)
Robyn Brisland’s HOWZAK did not go unbacked (12-1 from 16-1) when scoring at Lingfield last month, after which his connections were called in by the stewards. Asked to explain Howzak’s apparent improvement in form, the trainer’s representative said that he “could offer no explanation other than gelding may be hitting a bit of form”. That ties in with the seasonal pattern he’s displayed previously, with that latest win taking his Polytrack record in September, October and November to 311121 (4-6), improving to 111 (3-3) over today’s 5f trip only. He’s well drawn to attack and can follow up.
