1.40 Goodwood — LORD RIDDIFORD (1pt win — 5/1 Bet365, 13/2 generally)

I’m not totally convinced that stall 15 will aid the cause of LORD RIDDIFORD is his bid for a third straight win in this 5f handicap but I still want a small interest. I had expected him to run well in the “Dash” at Epsom on Derby Day but the ground was too quick and he trailed home in 16th place. His full course record reads 1511 (3-4), with the defeat excusable as he did too much too soon in front. He’s since been ridden more patiently and but trainer John Quinn also won this race with 33-1 shot El Astronaute in 2017.

4.35 Goodwood — LONE EAGLE (1pt e/w — 18/1 generally)

LONE EAGLE failed to stay 2m4f in the Ascot Gold Cup and didn’t appreciate the fast ground, fading into a 22-1 ninth of 12, just over 12 lengths behind winner Courage Mon Ami. That was the five-year-old’s first outing beyond an extended 1m5f but today’s 2m trip could be within his stamina compass, especially as the track and ground is in his favour. His course record stands at 113 (2-3) and his British record on officially good to soft or softer going reads 1113752 (3-7).

4.35 Goodwood — TASHKHAN (0.5pt e/w — 20/1 Bet365, 16/1 generally)

TASHKHAN has been struggling to get his head in front in the past few seasons but Brian Ellison’s five-year-old usually finishes to good effect and has place claims. He found only Trueshan too good when 50-1 for the Long Distance Cup on Champions Day in 2021 and he was only beaten by three-quarters of a length when third to Hamish in the Group 3 Silver Cup Stakes at York last time.

6.40 Galway — CURRENT OPTION (0.5pt e/w — 12/1 Bet365, 11/1 generally)

CURRENT OPTION rarely shows much in the first six month of the calendar year, scoring just one from 18 starts from January to June, with that win coming on the 18th June 2019 when 5-4 favourite. By contrast, he’s won six of his 22 starts from July onwards (+15.50 to a £1 level stake at SP) and was placed fourth at 28-1 in this race last year before returning five days later to land a valuable 7f handicap for the third year in a row. Saturday’s race is no doubt the big target again but he’s a big enough price to chance him today.
