12.55 Hereford – BERTIE WOOSTER (1pt E/W – 5/1 Paddy Power, 9/2 generally)

I wrote the following about in-form Joe Tizzard’s BERTIE WOOSTER when he reappeared in a 1m7f handicap hurdle on soft ground at Wincanton last month…

‘BERTIE WOOSTER’s maiden status remains intact after the 5-1 shot could only finish an 11-length third in the George Smith Horseboxes Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle but he was the only one of the first four finishers not to come from midfield or further back and it was a run worthy of upgrading. He had almost eight lengths to spare over the next prominent racer to finish and he should pick up a small race in due course, perhaps when returned to a longer trip on better ground.’

…he runs over an extended 2m5f on good ground today and his two previous handicap hurdle runs over 2m3f+ produced a narrow 8-1 second of 14 to Stanley Pincombe (a winner at Plumpton yesterday) and a 9-2 third of 11 at Chepstow.

3.15 Hereford – FAMILY POT (1.5pt win – 6/1 Bet365, 5/1 generally)

FAMILY POT reserves his best for right-handed Hereford and Ludlow when the ground is officially good or faster. His chase record under these conditions stands at 113113 (4-6) for a profit of £8.38 to a £1 level stake at SP. The Sheila Lewis-trained eight-year-old returns to the course and distance of his latest success and though the GoingStick suggests slower ground this time (6.5, as opposed to 7.3) it should still be fast enough for him. The ground was too slow and he was ridden by a very inexperienced amateur jockey when well beaten at Ludlow last time and the booking of Harry Cobden for the first time looks highly significant. His two previous mounts for the yard produced a 10-11 winner and a 4-1 third who traded at 1.41 in running after jumping the last fence two lengths clear.
