4.00 Exeter – MOKA DE VASSY (1pt win – 9/1 Midnite, 15/2 generally)

The Jane Williams-trained MOKA DE VASSY out-ran his 66-1 SP to finish a 12-length fifth of ten in the Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle on Trials Day at Cheltenham last term, staying on well when the race was all but over. That was his fourth straight run in Grade 1 or 2 company and he appreciated the switch to handicap company when third in first-time cheekpieces over the 2m7f trip at Exeter next time. He faced two more tough tasks in the spring – falling in the Pertemps Final at the Cheltenham festival before pulling up when 100-1 for a Grade 1 at Aintree – and was given a much easier task on his comeback at Warwick earlier this month, starting as the even-money favourite for maiden hurdle. He finished well beaten that day after reportedly never travelling but his trainer had several disappoint at the same meeting last year who showed much improved form next time. I’m willing to forgive Warwick on account of fitness and take a chance that he’ll do much better now back at Exeter with a run under his belt. He’s still a maiden after ten races but last year’s 50-1 Grade 2 second to Pied Piper (now rated 157) suggests there are races in him off today’s mark of just 122.

4.25 Wolverhampton – THAPA VC (1pt win – 7/2 generally)

THAPA VC went into my tracker after his ninth if 15 at Doncaster back in June, faring second best of those drawn low when the high numbers had a big advantage. He hasn’t enjoyed the rub of the green in three subsequent outings, doing well to finish in mid-division against the pace bias at Lingfield last time. Mark Rimell’s five-year-old has form figures in Wolverhampton handicaps of 111441 (4-6) and is 2lb lower than when successful on his latest trip to Dunstall Park.
