3.40 Musselburgh – GONE (1pt win – 9/2 generally)
The front-runners went off way too hard in the 7.5f handicap won by Park Street at Beverley on June 27, in which the hard-pulling Ey Up It’s The Boss disputed a very strong pace with Tartan Skirt. Charlie Johnston’s 2-1 favourite GONE wasn’t far behind them and took up the running two furlongs out. She was swamped by the closers but her four-length fourth was a solid effort in the circumstances and she should face less pace pressure this afternoon. Ascot Adventure can make the running, but she’s drawn closer to the inside rail than that rival and I’m hoping that Joe Fanning can boss proceedings.
8.00 Wolverhampton – NEWYORKSTATEOFMIND (1pt E/W – 20/1 Bet365, 16/1 generally)
I put up NEWYORKSTATEOFMIND as a bet at Thirsk early last month where he went down by a head in second place at 22-1 and he duly went one better in a small field at Hamilton next time. That took his turf score to just two wins from 37 starts, compared to four from 19 on the all-weather, and he looks very interesting now back on Tapeta. Ruth Carr’s six-year-old is drawn wide but that’s not insurmountable given his patient running style and there should be a good gallop on in this big field. He was only tenth of 14 when 28-1 at Beverley last time but he actually did well to finish only four lengths back from a terrible draw in stall 13 of 14 (the ground was good to firm and low draws dominated). His full record on Tapeta reads 12681043 (2-8) and he looks over-priced tonight.
