2.45 Chepstow – CUTHBERT DIBBLE (1pt win – 15/8 William Hill)

CUTHBERT DIBBLE hacked up by 19 lengths in a soft-ground novice hurdle over the extended 2m4f trip at Leicester almost a year ago to the day and was made favourite for the EBF Final at Sandown on the strength of that effort. Nigel Twiston-Davies’ six-year-old could only finish fifth of the 16 runners to Crambo but his patient running style was at a big disadvantage and his 11-length defeat in a race that has worked out extremely well was a sound effort. He was switched to front-running tactics when justifying 4-7 favouritism at Ffos Las next time and there should be plenty more to come this term.

3.20 Chepstow – MIDNIGHT GINGER (1pt win – 9/1 888 Sport, 17-2 William Hill)

Issuing Authority heads the betting at around 11-8 for this novices’ limited handicap chase but he only won a two-finisher beginners’ chase at Haydock last time, albeit comfortably, and his four runs over hurdles resulted in defeat at odds of 4-6, evens, 13-8 and 2-1. Authorised Speed has form figures over hurdles below Grade 1 level of 111 (3-3) but he hasn’t looked a natural since switched to chasing, falling at Ascot with the race at his mercy before a six-length third when 11-8 favourite at Plumpton. Zambezi Fix’s ability to handle heavy conditions will be an asset but I’m going to take a chance on MIDNIGHT GINGER, who split Wot You Wearing and Rare Clouds when beaten by only a short head into second place in a handicap hurdle here on her reappearance in late November. That form has been boosted by the winner/third and Andrew Martin’s eight-year-old would have needed the experience when beaten by just over 11 lengths at Exeter on her chase debut next time. Her only other Chepstow handicap outing resulted in a win and the outsider of four can cause an upset.
