1.42 Catterick – ZOOM STAR (1pt win – 7/2 generally)
ZOOM STAR unseated soon after the start on her latest outing but Bryan Smart’s mare has been freshened up by an 84-day break and is taken to bounce back from what looks a good draw in stall 11. The five-year-old has won this race in each of the last two seasons and should go close at least.
3.45 Chepstow – KING OF LOMBARDY (1pt win – 9/1 generally)
The Tizzard operation shows a profit with horses having their first run back following a wind operation, scoring with 18 of the 115 qualifiers (15.7%) for a profit of £43.69 to a £1 level stake at SP, and I’m expecting improvement from KING OF LOMBARDY now that he’s undergone the procedure. He remains a maiden after five starts but has run well on both previous seasonal debuts, finishing a seven-length fourth to Hymac (now rated 124 and due to run in Chepstow’s 3.15 today) when 18-1 for a Newton Abbot bumper and runner-up to Lallygag (rated 133) in a novices’ hurdle at Exeter. Progeny of his sire Milan have a great record following wind surgery, landing 22 of their 113 starts (19.5%) for a profit of £114.88, and the three trained by the Tizzard family produced two winners (17-2 and 7-1) and a 20-1 fourth. King Of Lombardy has improvement to find but the wind op could be the key and a mark of 99 is potentially generous.
5.15 Newcastle – BUZZ BOX (1pt E/W – 10/1 Bet365 & 888Sport, 9/1 generally)
Backing all progeny of the sire Adaay on Newcastle’s Tapeta surface would have found 17 winners from 83 bets for a profit of £65.70 to a £1 level stake at SP. BUZZ BOX hinted at ability when a 100-1 sixth of 11 at Beverley on his final of two starts for David Griffiths and looks a potential improver when he makes his debut for Bryan Smart this evening. Since 2014, ex-Griffiths runners are six from 34 at the first time of asking for their new handlers for a profit of £50.38 to a £1 level stake at SP.
