BERKSHIRE PHANTOM hit form at about this time last year on his return from a break and a gelding operation when trained by Andrew Balding, scoring narrowly over 7f at Southwell on January 8th and following up over the same specialist trip at Wolverhampton 36 days later. He began life for Fionn McSharry off a handicap mark of 84 but after several modest efforts at big prices on turf or over the wrong trip he found himself 20lb lower when returned to 7f at Newcastle in December where he finished a respectable 12-1 sixth in first-time cheekpieces. The switch to first-time blinkers saw him run a close third at Southwell last month and he won with plenty in hand at Wolverhampton on his most recent assignment, taking his Tapeta figures over a turning 7f to 11431 (3-5). Progeny of his sire Expert Eye have a good strike-rate when bidding to follow up a win – 19 winners from 65 runners (29.2%) for a profit of £5.42 to a £1 level stake at SP – and he is taken to defy a 5lb penalty.
