4.35 Leicester – BRAVE KNIGHT (2pt win – 15/8 generally)

I wrote the following about BRAVE KNIGHT after his fourth place in an 8.6f Wolverhampton maiden last September…

‘BRAVE KNIGHT started at 50-1 for this 8.6f Class 5 maiden but showed promise in fourth place. Sir Mark Prescott’s juvenile fared best of those ridden patiently behind runners priced at 7-4f, 3-1 and 9-2 and will be something to bet on when handicapping over a longer trip. The son of Sir Percy is entered in the Derby but his opening mark of 74 suggests any trip to Surrey is likely to involve Lingfield rather than Epsom.’

He proved that assessment to be correct by justifying 11-4 favouritism when making his handicap debut over 1m3.5f at Windsor on May 22nd (I didn’t have a penny on, as I was on holiday), clocking a fast time in the process (according to Proform’s figures). He kept on well, despite racing keenly and there should be plenty more to come off just a 5lb higher mark.

5.45 Wetherby – RWENEARLYTHEREDAD (1pt win – 15/2 Bet365, 6/1 generally)

RWENEARLYTHEREDAD is another of my tracker horses and I had this to say about him after his run at Catterick on April 26th…

‘The Declan Carroll-trained Rwenearlytheredad qualified as a bet for me on a breeding angle in the 5f British EBF 40th Anniversary Novice Stakes at Catterick last week and I was quite happy to throw a few quid each-way at the 40-1 shot, who had finished a creditable fifth at Thirsk on his debut a few weeks earlier. The Havana Grey gelding broke well for a newcomer that day but failed to settle and weakened to finish just over four lengths behind the winner. He was slow from the stalls on this occasion, ran green and kept on steadily under tender handling to again finish fifth, doing second best of those to come from off the pace. We’re probably not going to see the best of him until he goes handicapping but it will be surprising if he doesn’t find a race or two this season.’

He followed that run with a 25-1 sixth of 11 at Wolverhampton, doing good work from off the pace in the 5f maiden won by Tatterstall, who went on to land the 3YO “Dash” off a handicap mark of 82 at Epsom last Saturday. Rwenearlytheredad’s opening mark of 57 could underestimate his ability and he’s worth a punt.
