Ben Haslam had two runners go desperately close here yesterday and TANTALUS has drifted to a backable price for this 5f handicap. He caught the eye when runner-up in a 5.5f Wetherby handicap on his penultimate start, sitting too close to the strong early pace when the winner, third, fourth, fifth and sixth all coming from midfield or further back. He finished well clear of the other prominent racers that day and reportedly lost a shoe when beating only one home in Rwenearlytheredad’s race at Beverley next time. He seemed to handle deep going well enough when fifth in a heavy-ground 6f Catterick handicap back in April, keeping on after being hampered, and that form was boosted by subsequent victories for the winner, runner-up and third.
