FAKENHAM 3.10
JUKEBOX D’EDDY – 1pt win (10/1 generally)

Scudamore heads the market at around the 2-1 mark for this 2m4f handicap hurdle but the Jennie Candlish-trained six-year-old looked flattered by his last-time-out Stratford win where he challenged late/wide. The ground on the inside rail was badly churned up that day and those who raced prominently and took the shortest route round were at a big disadvantage (unusually for Stratford). JUKE BOX D’EDDY is a six-race maiden but he was a massive eyecatcher when a 40-1 fifth over 2m at Wetherby in January – his third run over hurdles which he needed for a handicap mark – cruising round at the back and looking as though he would have placed at least had he been given a more vigorous ride. I put him up as a bet over the same course and distance next time and he ran a blinder to finish second by half a length at 10-1. That form has received a couple of boosts – the winner, Darkest Day, was narrowly beaten at Perth and the third, Burrows Hall, has since scored at Carlisle. Jukebox D’Eddy himself was disappointing on his next outing, also at Wetherby, racing keenly in rear off the steady pace and finishing nine lengths back in sixth. He’s worth a try over this longer trip, despite having raced keenly last time, as there’s rarely any let up in the pace on this sharp track and the tempo should suit.

LUDLOW 4.50
MALINA OCARINA – (0.5pt e/w with the firms paying three places – 10/1 Sky Bet, 9/1 generally)

This 2m5.5f amateur jockeys’ handicap hurdle also features a potentially vulnerable favourite in the shape of Ike Sport. Neil Mulholland’s five-year-old was flattered when beating Ioupy Collonges at Taunton three runs back, as the runner-up (who we bet next time when successful at Exeter) raced in the ‘swamp’ on the inside rail. Ike Sport has been beaten at odds of 15-8 in both subsequent starts. There are also reasons to oppose second and third favourites Pyramid Place and Tiger Orchid and the bet looks to be MALINA OCARINA, bred to appreciate this step up in trip. Backing all progeny of Malinas over 2m4f or further on good to soft or softer going shows a profit and Alice Stevens rides this track well. She was only fifth at Stratford last time but ended up on the dead rail in the latter stages.
