LINGFIELD 12.20
GUSTAV HOLST – 0.5pt win (28-1 generally)
Mark Usher’s GUSTAV HOLST is a 13-race maiden but he’s only had three runs for his current handler and it could be significant that he pitches the four-year-old into an apprentice handicap for the first time. Usher has a fine record in races confined to apprentice jockeys, scoring with 14 of the 109 runners since the beginning of 2016 for a profit of £58.00 to a £1 level stake at SP,
KEMPTON 5.00
OPTIVA STAR – 0.5pt e/w (16-1 generally, Sky Bet four places)
The Richard Hannon yard has a fair record in Kempton nurseries, with 18 winners from 152 runners since the beginning of 2015. We’d have lost money by backing them blind (-£27.00 to a £1 level stake at SP) but would have turned a profit of £23.33 by only siding with the ones who were making their handicap debuts (nine winners from 51 bets). Those who finished fourth or worse on their latest outing had an eight from 36 record (+£35.50) and I’m taking a small punt on OPTIVA STAR now that he’s drifted at 16-1 from yesterday’s 8-1. Sky Bet’s four places offer is great value if you have access to that firm and he showed promise in his three turf starts in novice company.
