SURREY MIST – 1pt win (11/2 ladbrokes/Coral, 5/1 Bet365)

SURREY MIST was all the rage in the market when making his debut for Kevin Philippart De Foy in the Hippodrome Handicap at Windsor at the start of this month and the 5-2 favourite duly delivered, scoring by two and a half lengths from Bad Company after travelling strongly throughout the 1m3.5f contest. The three-year-old gelding won twice on Polytrack for George Baker earlier this year, but slow turf is likely to be his ideal surface and, post-race, his connections were talking in terms of the November Handicap at Doncaster. This Listed contest doesn’t look especially strong, and he can continue his progression.

PRETTY BOY FLOYD 0.5pt e/w (50/1 generally)

PRETTY BOY FLOYD showed very little when we bet him at the Curragh three runs back but, with the benefit of hindsight, he would have needed that after a three-month break. The ground was too quick at Bellewstown next time and though well held back at the Curragh subsequently, he at least finished closer than in the other two starts. It’s possible that he’s simply gone at the game but he’s worth one last throw of the dice in the first-time cheekpieces. He ran second of 29 in first-time visor when 66-1 in the autumn of 2017 and second of 22 at 25-1 in first-time blinkers last spring, suggesting that the new headgear could revitalise him.

PRIMROSE RIDGE – 1pt win (7/2 Generally)

The Darryll Holland-trained PRIMROSE RIDGE had shown a good level of ability on turf prior to her 100-1 fifteenth of 21 in the Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot and was sent off at 9-1 on her return from wind surgery in a 5f nursery Lingfield’s Polytrack last month. Having her first taste of the all-weather after a 97-day break, she broke well enough from her wide draw, but David Egan was happy to restrain her in rear rather than dispute the early running (her sole success came when making all). She was in last place with two furlongs to run but made stealthy late progress, looking like she might get into the places before finding her path blocked with about 50 yards to go. Egan eased her down and she had to settle for eighth place, less than two lengths behind the winner. She wasn’t disgraced over today’s when upped in Class to Listed level in the Two Year Old Trophy at Redcar next time and the return to Polytrack will suit.
