There were plenty who wanted to oppose GOLD CUP BAILLY when he stepped back up to three miles here last month because his only previous run at the trip had ended in a heavy defeat at Carlisle. However, they conveniently overlooked the fact that he hung badly left all the way round and had simply failed to handle the right-handed track. He won with plenty in hand, taking his record left-handed to 2111 (3-4), with the defeat by Ahoy Senor when favourite to beat that one in a maiden hurdle back in March 2021. I don’t usually recommend bets at this sort of price (Hills were 10-11 at the time of writing) but his three rivals all have question marks over their jumping, and he’ll probably trade at 1.5 when leading after jumping the first fence.
3.10 Leicester – STRIKING A POSE (1pt win – 13/2 888, 6/1 generally)
STRIKING A POSE was only eighth of 14 to Remastered at Kempton last time but did too much too soon and that run was worthy of a major upgrade. The winner, runner-up, third, fifth, sixth and seventh all came from midfield or further back and he fared second best of the prominent racers. Softer ground would have been preferable and I’m a little concerned by the presence in the saddle of Sam Twiston-Davies, who has been underperforming on his chase mounts in recent years, but I still want a small interest.
