11.30 Lingfield – WESTERN STARS (1.5pt win – 3/1 with bet365, 11/4 generally) + SMITH (0.5pt win – 12/1 with bet365, 11/1 generally)
WESTERN STARS was an eyecatcher in a Class 3 handicap over 1m2f at Newmarket on his penultimate start, doing second best of those to come from off the pace (he was also poorly drawn). Jim Boyle’s four-year-old ran with credit upped to 2m in another Class 3 contest at Kempton on his all-weather debut next time, going down by less than four lengths in a 22-1 eighth of 15. He’s won both handicap starts over 1m2f+ in Class 5 company, latterly by almost four lengths, and he should get a good tow into the race from Dark Mystery and Alpine Stroll.
SMITH could only finish a 66-1 eighth over course and distance last time but that was his first run for several months and it would have been needed. His record over the 2m trip on Lingfield’s Polytrack now reads 35111141318 (6-11), improving to 351111131 (6-9) when returned to the track withing six weeks of his previous outing, and improving again to 111111 (6-6) when starting at odds of 9-1 or shorter. He too will appreciate the likely honest gallop and is worth a saver.
11.50 Ayr – PROFESSOR KLUMP (1pt win – 6/1 bet365, 5/1 generally)
PROFESSOR KLUMP was sent off as the 2-1 favourite when making his rules debut in a maiden hurdle at Sedgefield last month, but Brian Hughes took the Donald McCain-trained grey to the inside of the track where the ground was much slower. His 21-length fifth is safe to ignore, especially as the yard’s runners have been needing their comeback outings this term. Expect improvement.
3.00 Ludlow – JOBESGREEN LAD (1pt win – 11/1 generally)
JOBESGREEN LAD tends to thrive on right-handed tracks at this time of year (November to January), recording form figures of 421111 (4-6), improving to 1111 (4-4) at Ludlow or Hereford only. Best when given a big field/strong pace scenario, he won this race 12 months ago and everything looks ideal for another big run today.
3.10 Newbury – GALLIC GEORDIE (1pt win – 15/2 bet365, 13/2 William Hill)
GALLIC GEORDIE did this column a favour when overcoming market weakness to score at Wetherby last month, a run that took his chase record in November/December stands to 11112F2501 (5-9). He’ll relish today’s soft going and, while Newbury isn’t usually the ideal venue for his patient running style, his two previous soft-ground course outings produced a win and runner-up effort. There are two or three in opposition who like to race on the front end, and it could again be teed up perfectly for him.
