3.20 Catterick – MAGICAL EFFECT (1pt win – 11/1 generally)

MAGICAL EFFECT is an 11-year-old, but he seems to retain his ability and he found only one too good when 16-1 for a 14-runner 7f Catterick handicap on his penultimate start. He was only sixth of nine at Catterick last time, but he missed the break and the early pace held up. He fared second best of those to come from off the pace and stablemate MUTANAASEQ, best of those ridden patiently in fourth that day, ran well on his next start, ‘winning’ the race on the far side when second at Nottingham. They both do battle again here but the bigger field, wide draw (often an advantage at Catterick when the mud is flying) and return of Jason Hart (on board for Magical Effect’s last two wins) cane see the old boy reverse the form.

3.40 Bath – HAGIA SOPHIA (1pt E/W – 4/1 generally)

First the bad news – HAGIA SOPHIA can miss the break. However, the good news is that when she does, she still tends to make the frame. Christopher Mason’s five-year-old caught the eye when best of the closers in second at Chepstow last time, a run that took her sprint record in headgear, aside from seasonal debuts, to 312142 (2-6). She handles some cut, is well drawn towards the inside and will be finishing to good effect in a race likely to be run at a decent gallop.

6.20 Naas – AUSSIE GIRL (1pt E/W – 9/2 Bet365, 7/2 generally)

AUSSIE GIRL has proved incredibly consistent since qualified for handicaps, recording form figures of 4132212 (2-7) and has recorded her two best RPRs (Racing Post Ratings) on her last two starts after the hood was left off. She made all in a 7f handicap at the Curragh before finding only British raider Strike Red too good when 9-2 favourite for the 20-runner Scurry Handicap (6.5f) at the same venue last week. She was the only one of the first five home not to come from midfield or further back and, though up in grade to Listed level, the smaller field and all-female opposition will make life easier. She’s well berthed in stall 3 and will hopefully take a lead from pace rival Radio Goo Goo (stall 1) before pouncing late.
