1.30 Nottingham – UMMING N’ AHING (1pt E/W – 22/1 generally)

Stall 1 of 12 made life very difficult for UMMING N’ AHING when 66-1 for a 6f Lingfield (AW) maiden on his third outing at two but he ran a stormer to finish a two-length fourth behind runners drawn 7, 8 and 10, despite racing in the ‘swamp’ on the inside rail. He failed to build on that the next twice but has been gelded since and is back on turf for the first time since his soft-ground 66-1 third at Brighton on his juvenile debut. He faces one or two interesting newcomers but is still worth an each-way punt. I’ve saved on POPULAR DREAM.

2.40 Nottingham – YEOMAN (0.5pt E/W – 11/1 generally)

The trouble with backing James Fanshawe runners is that there are always ridden patiently, even on tracks that don’t favour such tactics (he’s like an anti-Mark/Charlie Johnston). YEOMAN was sent off as one of the 5-2 co-favourites for his debut at Redcar last November, a track that is usually a pacesetters paradise, but of course he was ridden from off the pace and could never get involved, finishing just over eight lengths back in fourth behind runners described by the Racing Post as ‘made all, led against far rail’, ‘prominent’ and ‘prominent’. The 12-length 80-1 sixth from that race – H Key Lails – has won a minor race since. Yeoman ran at Kempton the following month and again caught the eye, doing best of the hold-up horses once more when fifth to Dionysian in a 1m restricted novice stakes at Kempton. The three-year-old looks capable of winning this year and though that might be at a track like Doncaster on his handicap debut, I still want a small interest today in the hope that there’s a strong gallop on.
