3.00 Ludlow – HERBIERS (1pt win – 11/2 bet365, 9/2 generally)

Young horses have dominated in Ludlow’s 2m4f Attwood Memorial Trophy Handicap Chase, with all six winners aged between five and seven. Simply siding with the youngest horse or horses would have helped us to find the winner on five occasions and top weight HERBIERS fits the bill. He surprised me when scoring on his return from a 180-day absence at Newbury in November as he usually needs a run or two before hitting peak form. Patient tactics were no help at Doncaster last time where he would have needed the experience on his chase debut and he looks a spot of value against likeable favourite Jobesgreen Lad, whose combined record here and at Hereford reads 1111 (4-4). I might have a saving forecast with the jolly, though he does seem best off a strong pace in big fields.

6.00 Kempton – BLACK BOX (1pt E/W – 18/1 Paddy Power, 16/1 generally)

BLACK BOX could only finish 11th of 13 when relatively fancied (8-1) for a Class 6 handicap at Lingfield on her latest start but ran much better than the result implies. She failed to settle under restraint, met trouble when making her effort and several of the other patiently-ridden runners from that contest have done well since – third home Beau Geste won at 9-1 next time, seventh-placed Real Estate scored cosily after being heavily supported from 5-1 into 3-1 and eighth-placed Won Love was an 8-1 Wolverhampton winner on his next outing. Black Box was fourth best of those to come from off the pace and looks worth a bet to break her 12-race maiden status.
