DANZAN (third, 7f handicap, Catterick, Saturday, October 15th)

It was a big advantage to race up with the pace towards the stands’ side rail in the 7f William Hill Pick Your Places Handicap and the race was dominated by high draws, with the first six drawn 14, 11, 5, 10, 12 and 13.DANZAN had the ideal run style but his draw made life difficult and he could never get on the faster strip of ground. His 16-1 third was a solid effort and the Ayr Bronze Cup winner won’t be inconvenienced buy the cut back to 6f.

GOODFELLA (second, 7f novice stakes, Yarmouth, Monday, October 10th)

The Patrick Owens-trained 28-1 shot GOODFELLA ran a blinder to finish second to Roger Varian’s Resolute Man in the 7f British Stallions Studs EBF Novice Stakes. Not best drawn in stall 4, he was ridden patiently in a race dominated by prominent types and was only one length down at the line. He has clearly benefitted from a break and being gelded since June’s debut effort at Doncaster where he beat only a couple home. He could be out again at Newbury this Friday.

HAVEAGOBEAU (fourth, 5f handicap, Monday, October 17th)

HAVEAGOBEAU out-ran his 28-1 SP to finish fourth of 11 in the 5f Cazoo Handicap at Windsor on Monday. He was well drawn towards the far side but his patient running style was at a disadvantage and the prominent racers never came back to the field, with the first three finishers described by the Racing Post as ‘pressed leader’, ‘prominent’, and ‘led narrowly’. This was a big improvement on what he’d shown in maiden/novice company and the son of Brazen Beau is bred to appreciate the switch to Tapeta.

HIGHJACKED (second, 6f veterans’ handicap, Catterick, October 15th)

HIGHJACKED was poorly drawn in stall 2 in the William Hill Best Odds Guaranteed Veterans’ Handicap, doing really well to finish second, splitting runners drawn 12 and 11. He’s very consistent, with this run taking his record in sprint handicaps on turf to 333788123331216732 (3-18).

PHOENIX AQUILIUS (third, 2m handicap hurdle, Huntingdon, Tuesday, October 11th)

PHOENIX AQUILIUS went into my tracker after his runner-up effort on Lingfield’s Polytrack back in February. He did well to finish so close in a race that didn’t favour his patient running style that day and it was a similar story in the Fairfax Saddles Sponsors Huntingdon Trainer Championship Handicap Hurdle last Tuesday, with 10-1 winner Geometrical allowed to dictate. He kept on from the rear to finish less than three lengths back in third on his handicap hurdle debut and this three-time all-weather winner will find a race over hurdles on this evidence.

POCKET THE PROFIT (seventh, 7f handicap, Catterick, Saturday, October 15th)

It was a big advantage to race up with the pace towards the stands’ side rail in the 7f William Hill Pick Your Places Handicap and the race was dominated by high draws, with the first seven finishers coming out of stalls 14, 11, 5, 10, 12. 13 and 6). POCKET THE PROFIT could only finish seventh was George Boughey’s 15-2 shot was ridden patiently from his single-figure stall and can be given another chance. He’s entered at Newbury on Friday and at Doncaster 24 hours later.

POLITESSE (third, 3m Grade 3 chase, Punchestown, Wednesday, October 12th)

POLITESSE finished a respectable third to Galvin in the 3m Irish Daily Star – Best For Racing Coverage Chase at Punchestown last Wednesday, despite jumping out to his left on the right-handed track. Lorna Fowler’s eight-year-old now has chase figures of 1U6113 (3-6). Surprisingly, all five of his career wins have taken place on right-handed tracks, though he hasn’t had many opportunities at left-handed venues. It’s also possible that course direction is not as important as the class of the race he contests – his record in Graded or Listed company now reads 2554U0763 (0-9), as compared to 311111 (5-6) at a lower level, with the defeat at 66-1 in a 17-runner bumper on his racecourse debut.

SHELIR (won, 1m handicap, Ascot, Saturday, October 17th)

SHELIR returned an SP of 80-1 when landing the Balmoral Handicap (Sponsored By Qipco) and could have been even bigger had he not been the subject of a late move on the betting exchanges (95 from 190). He usually struggles in the summer, scoring just one from 17 starts in June, July and August, with the sole success on 29th August this year. In other months, he’s now five from 17 for a profit of £98.00.

SHOWMAN (third, 1m2f handicap, Windsor, Monday, October 17th)

SHOWMAN fared best of the closers when third to V Twelve in the 1m2f Breeders’ Cup On Sky Sports Racing Handicap, doing well to finish only three-quarters of a length back after being switched to challenge. He’s proving expensive to follow since gelded but has made the frame in all three starts on good to soft or softer going and there could be a win in him.

WESTERTON (second, 1m maiden, Nottingham, Wednesday, October 12th)

WESTERTON had shown promise over 7f at Doncaster and Haydock on his first two starts, finishing fourth and fifth respectively, and, like most progeny of Belardo, improved for the step up to 1m when runner-up in the British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Stakes. Alan King’s juvenile was the only one of the first five home to come from off the pace and had 13 lengths to spare over the next hold-up horses, Sir Michael Stoute’s Survival. He’ll be winning soon on this evidence.
