BEAT THE EDGE, third, 3m novices’ handicap chase, Musselburgh, February 19th

BEAT THE EDGE was backed into favouritism for the George Crawford Legacy Trust Novices’ Handicap Chase but the 13-8 shot jumped badly out to his left and trailed home last of the three runners, 43 lengths behind the winner. He’s now 0-12 under Rules but will be worth another chance when returned to a left-handed track.

COPPER MOUNTAIN, eighth, 1m handicap, Newcastle, Monday, February 20th

COPPER MOUNTAIN was strong in the market the night before racing (7-2 from 8-1) but was a massive drifter just before the off, returning at 15-2 (Betfair SP 9.6). I’d recommended her as a bet because of her patient running style and eyecatching effort from a poor wide draw at Southwell on her previous start but Joanna Mason adopted a prominent position from the outset. The four-year-old raced keenly before weakening tamely to finish eighth of the nine runners. Her three wins have come on left-handed tracks (Wetherby, Southwell and Chelmsford), so perhaps the straight course was to blame.

CORRIGEEN ROCK, second, 1m7.5f handicap chase, Sandown, Thursday, February 16th

CORRIGEEN ROCK got into a three-way battle for the lead in the “Ubique” Handicap Chase at Sandown last Thursday and helped to set up the race for Bun Doran. He did well to go down by just a length and quarter in second place, pulling 11 lengths clear of the third, and can be supported next time.

GREEN BOOK, fifth, Grade 2 hurdle, Haydock, Saturday, February 18th

GREEN BOOK beat only one home when 7-2 for the Grade 2 Rendlesham Hurdle at Haydock last Saturday but has never won outside of handicap company and it’s probably safe to ignore this. His record in handicaps reads 3316411U161 (5-11) for a profit of £12.83 and the return to that level will suit.

MILL GREEN, third, 3m handicap hurdle, Haydock, Saturday, February 18th

MILL GREEN fared best of those ridden patiently when a seven-length third in the Pertemps Qualifier at Haydock last Saturday and the veteran will be of interest for the final of this series at Cheltenham next month. He was ridden closer to the early pace than ideal when a 33-1 third in the race last year and also ran well at the festival in 2020 and in 2021.

RHUBARB BIKINI, 7f handicap, Southwell, Friday, February 17th

RHUBARB BIKINI ran a pleasing race on his debut for Simon Hodgson, finishing a 14-1 sixth of 11 behind handicap good-thing Local Bay. The six-year-old finished second best of those to race up with the pace and will find easier opportunities in the near future.

SMITH, won, 2m handicap, Lingfield, Friday, February 17th

SMITH was briefly caught flat-footed when the pace quickened in the 2m handicap at Lingfield last Friday but stayed on strongly to score by a comfortable neck from Liberated Lad. His record over course and distance now reads 3511114131 (6-10), improving to 111111 (6-6) when starting at odds of 9-1 or shorter.

THE BAY WARRIOR, fourth, 1m2f handicap, Chelmsford, Thursday, February 16th

THE BAY WARRIOR looked to have an ideal opportunity in the 1m2f Ministry Of Sound Handicap but 7lb claimer Rose Dawes used up plenty of petrol in the early stages and got into a battle for the early lead with Boasty. The 11-8 favourite faded into fourth and can be given another chance.

VICTORY ECHO, fifth, 2m4f handicap chase, Musselburgh, Sunday, February 19th

VICTORY ECHO wouldn’t be an obvious one to follow having finished 76 lengths back in fifth but this was his first run for 122 days and would have been needed. He’s often gone well on his second start after a break, and he could out-run likely big odds on his next outing.

WAKE UP HARRY, non-runner, 1m handicap, Kempton, Wednesday, February 15th

WAKE UP HARRY was scratched when drawn very wide in the 1m Unibet 3 Uniboosts A Day Handicap at Kempton last Wednesday and I know from experience that such horses often make good bets next time, as it’s likely a big run was expected. He was short-headed at Lingfield on his previous start and will be of particular interest at Chelmsford where his prominent style is usually an asset.
