ALPESH AMIN (unseated rider, 2m maiden hurdle, Limerick, Tuesday, November 22nd)

It was a big advantage to race wide in the hurdle races at Limerick last Tuesday but 6-4 second favourite ALPESH AMIN raced in the deep stuff on the inside rail. He took up the running five out but was headed and beaten when unseating two out. It was still a respectable effort on the slowing part of the track and the market is likely to overreact to this next time.

ANNIE MC (third, 2m4f mares’ Listed chase, Carlisle, Sunday, November 27th)

ANNIE MC, off the track since her second to Zambella in a similar race at Aintree last December, would have needed her comeback effort against the same rival at Carlisle last Sunday and her modest third can be excused. She was very weak in the betting (6-1 from 3-1) and is best judged on her chase record, aside from seasonal debuts, of 1119511 (5-7), improving to 11111 (5-5) in mares’ races. She’s likely to do better if taking on Zambella at Aintree again next month.

HENNING (eighth, 2m mares handicap hurdle, Limerick, Tuesday, November 22nd)

HENNING never left the ‘swamp’ on the inside rail in the Annual Membership Only 180 Euros Mares Handicap Hurdle and the 9-2 joint favourite trailed home in eighth place, 43 lengths behind the winner. She kept on well when landing a 2m3.5f maiden hurdle at Clonmel on her penultimate start and the return to a longer trip could see her bounce back.

INDULGING (fifth, 2m maiden hurdle, Limerick, Tuesday, November 22nd)

INDULGING, 18-1 for the same maiden hurdle as Alpesh Amin (see above), was another ‘swamp’ dweller who struggled to make an impact. His 23-length fifth was a respectable effort in the circumstances and the Ted Walsh-trained four-year-old will be of interest when switched to handicap company.

KILLER CLOWN (fifth, 2m4f handicap chase, Newbury, Friday, November 25th)

KILLER CLOWN finished tailed off in the 2mf Class 2 Coral Bet Bundles Handicap Chase at Newbury last Friday, though might be worth another chance when returned to a right-handed track. Aside from seasonal debuts, his record right-handed reads 363131P13 (3-9), improving to 111 (3-3) at Kempton and Wincanton only.

MADE IN THE WOODS (13th, 2m handicap hurdle, Limerick, Tuesday, November 22nd)

MADE IN THE WOODS was beaten by a long way in the 2m Mr Binman Christmas Racing Festival 26th-29th December Handicap Hurdle but was on the inside rail where the ground was badly churned up. Nibbled at in the betting, the 16-1 shot is likely capable of better than this and can be given another chance.

MAID O’MALLEY (second, 2m4f Listed mares’ chase, Carlisle, Sunday, November 27th)

MAID O’MALLEY took her record on right-handed tracks to 22212 (1-5) when running a blinder at 28-1 behind Zambella. She traded at 3.0 from a Betfair SP of 42.44 and would have been getting chunks of weight from the winner were it a handicap. She can go one better soon.

NEW BARN LANE (seventh, 2m maiden hurdle, Limerick, Tuesday, November 22nd)

Eoin McCarthy’s 22-1 newcomer NEW BARN LANE caught the eye in division two of the Adare Manor Opportunity Maiden Hurdle after taking the ‘swamp’ route on the inside rail. His 15-length seventh of 14 weas better than it looked and he can be supported each-way for a similar race next time.

PHILS CHOICE (ran out, 2m maiden hurdle, Limerick, Tuesday, November 22)

PHILS CHOICE never left the deep ground on the inside rail in division two of the Adare Manor Opportunity Maiden Hurdle but was four lengths ahead and going well when jinking right and running out at the second last flight. I expect she would have been worn down by a finisher out wide had she stayed in the race, but it was still an eyecatching effort. She’s entered at Thurles on Thursday.

SAMUEL JACKSON (third, 3m handicap chase, Bangor, Saturday, November 26th)

I had a good chat with trainer Richard Mitford-Slade at Exeter on Haldon Gold Cup day and he suggested that five-time winner SAMUEL JACKSON would need his first run of the season at Fontwell the following week. He was pulled out of that race because the good to soft ground was deemed too quick and was also scratched for the same reason at Exeter on November 20th. He finally reappeared at Bangor in the Xenon Workplace Handicap Chase at Bangor last Saturday where he attracted support from 25-1+ into 12-1. He ran well up with the early pace before lack of peak fitness told and he faded into third, just over ten lengths behind the winner. This was highly encouraging, and he’ll likely win again this season, perhaps when given another run. He scored at the third time of asking in the 2019/2020 season and fourth-time out last term.
