3.02 Lingfield – KALIF D’AIRY (1pt win – 6/1 bet365)
This 2m4f handicap chase has been a graveyard in recent years for the higher-weighted runners, with those in the top three in the weights failing to register a win from 33 runners (expected winners = 4.63). This suggests that we should field against GOLD IN THE RIVERS, SILVER THORN and BATWOMEN. It’s also been a good record for maidens, with seven winners from 24 runners for a profit of £39.18 to a £1 level stake at SP. Maidens that were fourth or lower in the weights were seven from 19 for a profit of £44.18. There are two qualifiers this year – Ben Pauling’s FOLLOWCATO and Gary and Josh Moore’s KALIF D’AIRY. The first-named jumped out to his left on occasions when running over hurdles and might not be suited by left-handed Lingfield, so I’ll go with the Moore horse. The five-year-old showed plenty of form in the mud last year and the recent rain has aided his cause. His yard won this with a 28-1 chase debutant Walk In The Wild three years ago and, since 2010, they are 5-22 with chase newcomers in handicaps at this venue.
