Ascot Racing Tips (Saturday 9 May 2026)
Seven races make up Ascot’s card on Saturday, with a 1.30pm start. We have a brace of selections for the action at the Berkshire venue.
2.20 Ascot – Shiplake (1pt win – 9/1)
Kevin Philippart De Foy won this race back in 2022 with Vafortino, and he can strike again in the Victoria Cup on Saturday with the ultra-progressive Shiplake. The four-year-old heads to Ascot’s 2.20pm on the back of two wins on the all-weather. Victories at Southwell in November and January has seen him progress immeasurably since switching from the yard of Charles Hills. An easy three-and-a-quarter length winner last time out, he showed when with Hills that he can perform with credit on the turf, so the switch to grass shouldn’t be an issue. He went up a whopping 10lbs for that win last time out, so has to run off 92 here. However, he’s shown no sign that he can’t progress again and he could well down a host of exposed handicappers in this event.
2.55 Ascot – Valedictory (1pt win – 2/1)
Having broken his maiden tag at Chelmsford at the third time of asking, Valedictory continued on an upward curve last time out when second at Newbury. John & Thady Gosden’s charge was only beaten a neck that day, and should improve again. He’s been given a 3lbs rise ahead of the 2.55pm at Ascot, but he looks capable of scoring here. Closing all the way to the line in that 1m 2f contest, he steps up in trip on Saturday, which should see him kick on again. With Billy Loughnane taking the ride, the pair can simply outclass their rivals and use this as a springboard to bigger and better things.
Lingfield Racing Tips (Saturday 9 May 2026)
Lingfield’s biggest day of the year takes place on Saturday, as potential Classic hopefuls assemble at the track. We pick out two selections during the afternoon’s action, which begins at 12.55pm.
1.58 Lingfield – Maho Bay (1pt win – 13/8)
Coolmore and Godolphin will do battle in the Lingfield Derby Trial at 1.58pm with Isaac Newton representing the former, whilst hot favourite Maho Bay lines up for the latter. Add in the William Haggas-trained Maltese Cross and you have an exciting contest. Unbeaten in his two starts, Maho Bay has looked every bit a Classic contender and Charlie Appleby’s raider can storm to glory here. He may be 33/1 for the Derby, but a win here should book his place at Epsom. He trounced O’Brien’s Amadeus Mozart at Newmarket last time out, and with Isaac Newton failing to fire on his first start (fourth at Newmarket) then Maho Bay should down him. Maltese Cross won at Newbury last time out and should improve, but Maho Bay can make it three from three for Appleby and William Buick.
2.40 Lingfield – Royal Velvet (1pt win – 5/2)
William Knight’s Royal Velvet scooted clear to win a Newmarket handicap in fine style last time out. Now, she will look to follow that up in Group 3 company in the Chartwell Fillies’ Stakes at 2.40pm. This is a whole new test for her, with the likes of Copacabana Sands and Dash Of Azure likely to be notable threats. However, the manner in she downed her handicap rivals last time out suggests she’s more than capable of claiming Pattern victory. With that aforementioned duo making their seasonal reappearance here then Royal Velvet will have the upper hand with a run on her record already this campaign. Set to be an intriguing contest, Knight’s charge can prevail in the closing stages.
