17:00 – Meath Farm Machinery Claiming Race

Race Details: 7f | | Going: GOOD | | flat

This is a typically messy Bellewstown claimer with plenty holding some sort of chance, but not many arriving in bombproof form. Adrian McGuinness has a strong hand with Gloriously Glam, Minaun View and Land Of The Giants, and that trio could easily dominate the finish if running to their marks. Alex Belardo comes here off a win and is clearly thriving, while Smithfield has the highest rating in the field but needs to leave a few flat efforts behind. The draw may matter with 17 going to post over 7f here, and Land Of The Giants has certainly been favoured in that respect from stall 1. It is not a deep race in quality, but it is a tricky betting heat where current sharpness and a good tactical ride should count for plenty.

Top Selections

1. Land Of The Giants – 5/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Rory Cleary | Trainer: Adrian McGuinness | Form: 621037 | Rating: 75 | Topspeed: 71

He makes plenty of appeal in a race where solid recent claiming-level form is not easy to find. That topspeed figure of 71 is the best on offer here and his overall profile suggests a horse who can be very competitive in this grade when things fall right. The draw in stall 1 could be a real asset around Bellewstown, and McGuinness is more than capable of placing one to good effect in this sort of contest. Last time was not his best, but his earlier win and follow-up efforts read well enough in this company. At 5/1, he looks the percentage call. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Alex Belardo – 13/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Donagh O’Connor | Trainer: John C McConnell | Form: 335621 | Rating: 67 | Topspeed: 62

Alex Belardo is the one I would want onside each-way because he comes here in proper nick and that counts for a lot in races like this. The recent form figures tell the story: he has been knocking on the door and got his head back in front last time, so confidence should be high. He does have to concede weight to a few better-treated rivals on official figures, but this is not an intimidating field and McConnell’s horses are usually well prepared for these opportunities. Donagh O’Connor is a positive booking and, at 13/2, he looks a fair each-way punt to keep the run going. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Land Of The Giants is the win play, with his draw, pace profile and standout topspeed figure all giving him strong claims in an ordinary claimer. Alex Belardo is the each-way alternative in a big field, arriving here in better form than most. The obvious dangers are Gloriously Glam, who has the class to take this, and Smithfield if Gavin Cromwell can spark him back to life.

17:35 – Irish EBF Median Sires Series (C & G) Maiden (IRE Incentive Race)

Race Details: 7f | | Going: GOOD | | flat

This looks a useful enough Bellewstown maiden for the grade, with a mix of once-raced juveniles who should come forward and a few interesting newcomers from powerful yards. Kraar sets the standard on what he has actually achieved, his 72 figures backed up by the best rating in the field, and he already looks well suited by this 7f. High Morals is bound to be popular with Colin Keane booked after a low-key debut, while Full Volume also has experience and a fair bit more substance to his first run than the bare finishing position suggests. Pennsylvania Ave and Cudawudashuda are the obvious debutantes to note in the market, but in a race where proven juvenile form matters, I’d rather side with the colt who has already shown he can do it under race conditions.

Top Selections

1. Kraar – 7/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Chris Hayes | Trainer: Donnacha Aidan O’Brien | Form: 72 | Rating: 85 | Topspeed: 67

Kraar is the one with the most persuasive profile. He improved from his debut seventh to finish second next time, and that progression is exactly what you want to see from a two-year-old tackling a maiden like this. An official mark of 85 and a Topspeed of 67 put him clear on the numbers, and crucially he has already shown he can cope with race pressure better than most of these. Chris Hayes is a positive booking and Donnacha O’Brien’s youngsters usually know their job once they’ve had a couple of starts. At 7/2, he isn’t exactly hiding from the market, but he still makes plenty of appeal as the solid one.

Bet: WIN

2. Full Volume – 13/2 with Paddy Power

Jockey: Shane Foley | Trainer: Mrs John Harrington | Form: 6 | Rating: 77 | Topspeed: 58

Full Volume appeals as the each-way play because his debut sixth was better than it reads at first glance. He comes here with a rating of 77 and a Topspeed of 58, which gives him a decent platform in this company, and the Harrington-Foley combination is always worth respecting in juvenile races. He should know a lot more now, and this extra experience can count for plenty against newcomers who may need the outing. The favourite end of the market is focused elsewhere, but 13/2 looks a fair each-way price for a colt who doesn’t need to find bundles to hit the frame and could easily take a bigger step forward second time out.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Kraar is the straightforward win bet given he brings the strongest established form and the best figures into the race. Full Volume makes more appeal as the each-way option at the prices, with natural improvement on the cards after his debut. High Morals is the obvious danger if taking a big step forward, while Pennsylvania Ave is the newcomer the market may have right.

18:07 – Smiths Of Drogheda Ford Classic Handicap

Race Details: 7f | | Going: GOOD | | flat

This is a proper Bellewstown handicap: big field, plenty with a squeak, and not much room for getting the fractions wrong. Bay Of Dreams heads the market after a better effort from stall 1, while Zipster arrives on the back of two solid placed runs and looks sure to be popular. Comfort Line is admirably consistent for a veteran, Bucaneer’s Spirit keeps knocking on the door, and Darkdeserthighway has the sort of profile that makes him dangerous despite a wide draw. It doesn’t look an especially deep race, but it is a tricky one because several are clustered around the same level. In a contest where tactical position over 7f will matter, I’d rather side with those coming here in form and still looking well enough treated.

Top Selections

1. Zipster – 9/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Dylan Browne McMonagle | Trainer: Gerard O’Leary | Form: 30-933 | Rating: 78 | Topspeed: 46

Zipster has been shaping like a winner in waiting. Those recent thirds suggest he’s holding his form really well, and a mark of 78 looks manageable in this company if he gets a smooth run from stall 4. He’s not one of those flashy handicap plots, but he is dependable, and in races like this that counts for plenty. Dylan Browne McMonagle is an eye-catching booking for a horse who should travel strongly over this 7f, and the available 9/2 looks fair rather than stingy given the strength of his recent efforts. He doesn’t need to improve much to take this. Bet: WIN

2. Bucaneer’s Spirit

Jockey: Gary Carroll | Trainer: Ian Patrick Donoghue | Form: -16334 | Rating: 73 | Topspeed: 67

Bucaneer’s Spirit makes plenty of each-way appeal because he keeps running his race and has the right draw in stall 2 to get involved early. The recent sequence of 3-3-4 says he’s knocking loudly enough, and that topspeed figure of 67 is right up there for a race of this nature. He’s not obviously thrown in, but he is solid, uncomplicated and likely to be ridden positively by Gary Carroll, which is no bad thing around here. In a 15-runner handicap with four places on offer, he looks the sort who can reward an each-way punt even if one or two are slightly better treated. Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Zipster is the win play because his recent form is the most persuasive and he looks set for another prominent showing. Bucaneer’s Spirit is the each-way alternative in a race where consistency and a handy draw could be decisive. Bay Of Dreams is the obvious danger from stall 1, while Comfort Line and Darkdeserthighway also command respect in a race that won’t take much winning.

18:37 – Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden

Race Details: 5f | | Going: GOOD | | flat

This looks a fairly informative little 2yo maiden rather than a deep one, with the market understandably centred on three runners. Bold Commander is likely to come on plenty for his debut fifth for A P O’Brien, but he does have to concede race experience and a few pounds to the fillies. April Mist already sets the standard on bare figures after finishing second first time out, while Tradewinds brings the most solid body of form having hit the frame on all three starts and posted the best rating in the field. Over this sharp 5f, professionalism and early speed will matter, so I’d rather side with those who have already shown they can handle the job. It’s not impossible the favourite simply improves past them, but there’s enough substance elsewhere to make this more interesting than the betting suggests.

Top Selections

1. April Mist – 9/4 with Bet365

Jockey: Colin Keane | Trainer: G M Lyons | Form: 2 | Rating: 83 | Topspeed: 44

April Mist makes plenty of appeal as the win play. A debut second is often the most solid piece of form in races like this and her mark of 83 is the best in the line-up, which immediately puts her right at the head of affairs. The Lyons-Keane combination is always worth noting in juvenile maidens and this filly gets in with just 128, which matters against the colts over a bare 5f. At 9/4 she is not exactly hiding from the market, but that price still looks fair if she takes the normal step forward from first to second start. She has already shown enough to hold strong claims. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Two Brigade – 18/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Jamie Powell | Trainer: M D O’Callaghan | Form: 85 | Rating: 73 | Topspeed: 72

For an each-way angle, Two Brigade is much more interesting than his price suggests. The bare form figures of 8 and 5 do not leap off the page, but a Topspeed of 72 is easily the standout number in this field and hints that there was more substance to that latest effort than the market is crediting. He also has a workable draw in stall 2 for a sharp sprint and comes from a yard well capable of readying juveniles as they gain experience. Available at 18/1, he looks the value play against shorter-priced rivals with similar questions to answer. If he breaks on terms and travels, he can outrun those odds comfortably. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

April Mist is the main bet because she has already produced the strongest single piece of form in the race and should improve again. Two Brigade is the each-way punt at a big price, with that standout Topspeed figure making him hard to ignore. Bold Commander and Tradewinds are the obvious dangers, but neither looks bombproof at the prices.

19:10 – Landy, Muldoon & Co Maiden

Race Details: 5f | | Going: GOOD | | flat

This looks a fairly ordinary Bellewstown maiden on paper, but it should still take a bit of winning. Sparky Sparky sets the standard on a mark of 85 and arrives off a solid second, so he is the obvious starting point in a race lacking depth. Ennoble has bits of form that give him a squeak from a handy low draw, while Profit Surge is the experienced older maiden who keeps knocking on the door without getting his head in front. Focaccia and White Smoke have shown enough to make the principals work, but neither comes here with the same strength of recent profile. Over 5f on good ground, early pace and track position will matter plenty, and this does not look the deepest maiden you’ll see.

Top Selections

1. Sparky Sparky – 11/8 with Bet365

Jockey: Ben Coen | Trainer: J P Murtagh | Form: -30482 | Rating: 85 | Topspeed: 66

Sparky Sparky is the one they all have to beat. He brings the best rating in the field, he is still a 3yo with more upside than the exposed older runners, and that latest second suggested his turn is near. The form string is not flashy at first glance, but there has been consistency in better company than this and dropping into an ordinary maiden like this looks a major opportunity. Ben Coen is an eye-catching booking and, for a yard that does well with this type, he looks hard to oppose if breaking on terms. At 11/8, he is no giveaway, but the favourite still makes plenty of appeal. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Profit Surge – 9/1 with Betfair

Jockey: Colin Keane | Trainer: Gerard Keane | Form: 366322 | Rating: 68 | Topspeed: 53

Profit Surge is not an easy horse to fall in love with as a serial maiden, but he is at least arriving here in form and this is not the strongest contest. Those last three runs, reading 3-2-2, show he is holding his level well, and the booking of Colin Keane catches the eye straight away. He is a 5yo taking on younger legs, so there is an obvious ceiling to his ability, but in a race where several rivals still have plenty to prove, his battle-hardened profile could easily see him hit the frame again. At 9/1, he makes more each-way appeal than some of the more fashionable 3yos. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Sparky Sparky is the win play and the most solid option in a race that does not look deep. For an each-way punt, Profit Surge makes more sense than taking cramped prices about the lesser 3yo dangers, especially with Colin Keane booked. Ennoble is the obvious threat if bouncing back from that latest non-completion, while Focaccia is another not to dismiss lightly.

19:44 – Eco Bullet Handicap

Race Details: 5f | | Going: GOOD | | flat

This is a proper Bellewstown sprint handicap: plenty of pace, plenty of exposed form, and just enough unexposed angles to make it awkward. Happy Henry arrives in the best recent nick and sets the standard on consistency, while Whatswrongnow and Steel Magnolia have been knocking on the door in similar company. Platino Bianco comes here off a win but has to prove that wasn’t just a one-off, and Bye Bye Now is another with a recent victory on the page. The draw could matter over this sharp 5f, but in a 14-runner dash I’d be more interested in who can travel and finish under pressure. It’s not a deep race in quality, but it is a very tricky betting heat with several holding realistic claims.

Top Selections

1. Happy Henry – 4/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Leigh Roche | Trainer: W McCreery | Form: 523313 | Rating: 61 | Topspeed: 57

He’s the one arriving with the most solid and repeatable profile. That form string tells its own story: he keeps turning up, keeps running his race, and there’s no fluke about his current level. A mark of 61 still looks workable given how regularly he’s getting competitive, and his Topspeed figure stacks up perfectly well for this grade. McCreery runs a few in here, but Happy Henry is the stable runner with the strongest recent body of work and Leigh Roche knows how to deliver one late in these sprint handicaps. At 4/1, he isn’t hiding from the market, but he still makes plenty of appeal as the percentage call. Bet: WIN

2. Steel Magnolia – 6/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Declan McDonogh | Trainer: W McCreery | Form: 64-434 | Rating: 66 | Topspeed: 56

She looks the each-way value in a race where plenty have chances but not many are especially trustworthy. Steel Magnolia has been holding her form well, and those recent placed efforts suggest she’s hovering around the right mark rather than being badly treated. The slight concern is the wide draw in 14, but she’s got the sort of profile for a race like this: reliable enough, weighted to be competitive, and partnered by Declan McDonogh, who is more than capable of getting the fractions right in a five-furlong burn-up. With four places on offer, 6/1 feels fair for a mare who should be there or thereabouts again. Bet: EACH-WAY

Danger: Whatswrongnow is very easy to see hitting the frame again after another solid placed effort.

Betting Strategy

Happy Henry is the straightforward win play because he brings the clearest current form and least guesswork. Steel Magnolia makes more appeal as the each-way punt, especially with four places available in a wide-open sprint. The main danger is Whatswrongnow, while Platino Bianco and Bye Bye Now also have enough recent form to make this competitive if things fall right.

20:17 – Dore & Co. Solicitors Handicap

Race Details: 1m 4f | | Going: GOOD | | flat

This is a proper Bellewstown handicap headache: 19 runners, plenty with bits and pieces of recent form, and not many you could call bombproof. Cala Gracioneta is the obvious one after shaping much better when second last time and the market has latched on accordingly, while Sir Trancealot is an interesting 3yo with a light weight and scope to do better at the trip. Masego comes here off a win and looks dangerously well treated if building on that, and Jazz Forever has enough recent encouragement to figure again. In a race like this, though, I’d rather lean toward runners who are either still progressing or have shown they can cope with a scrap in these staying handicaps. Tricky puzzle, not a deep race, and a bit of value-hunting is sensible.

Top Selections

1. Sir Trancealot – 4/1 with Betfair

Jockey: Patrick McGettigan | Trainer: J P Murtagh | Form: 0773 | Rating: 59 | Topspeed: 34

The profile is more appealing than the bare figures might suggest. Sir Trancealot is a 3yo who took a clear step forward when third last time, and in this sort of low-grade staying handicap that kind of upward curve matters more than flashy numbers. He gets in here off just 129 and, crucially, still looks like one with a bit of untapped improvement now stretching out over 1m4f. J P Murtagh’s runners tend to know their job in races like this, and 4/1 is fair enough in a field where several of the older exposed types have had plenty of chances. He looks the percentage call rather than a sexy one. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Masego – 10/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Donagh O’Connor | Trainer: John C McConnell | Form: /0-551 | Rating: 60 | Topspeed: 57

Masego makes plenty of each-way appeal at double-figure odds. That latest win was his best recent effort by some margin and the Topspeed figure of 57 is one of the more persuasive numbers in this field. He’s only 4lb higher than for that success, still carries just 128, and John C McConnell is more than capable of placing one to follow up before the assessor really gets hold of them. In a race where some shorter-priced rivals are easy enough to pick holes in, 10/1 feels a workable price for a horse arriving here in form and seemingly well suited by this test. He’s the value each-way punt. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Sir Trancealot is the win play: he’s one of the few in here who looks capable of improving past this mark. Masego is the each-way alternative with five places on offer, especially after that recent win and a solid Topspeed figure. Cala Gracioneta is the obvious danger if backing up the latest second, while Jazz Forever is another who could easily make the frame.
