Chester & Fontwell Racing Tips - Andrew Mount's Best Bets for Wednesday 6 May

One of British racing’s most historic sites hosts its headline raceday on Wednesday. The Roodee is open for business in 2026, as Chester hosts its three-day card, with Classic clues to be had. Two of Andrew Mount’s tips run at Chester on Wednesday. He also has an evening best bet running at Fontwell.

Grosvenor have a fabulous welcome offer for horse racing punters as they are offering Double The Odds to a maximum £10 stake.

Chester Racing Tips (Wednesday 6 May 2026)

The opening day of Chester’s feature race meeting of the year takes place on Wednesday. Andrew has two selections on the Roodee, both at big each-way prices.

1.30 Chester – Yahaira (0.5pt e/w – 33/1 Coral., Ladbrokes, 28/1 Hills, 25/1 bet365)

Colts and geldings are just two from 42 in the last ten renewals of the Lily Agnes Stakes (-£36.00 to a £1 level stake at SP, expected winners = 4.41, A/E = 0.45) while horses foaled in April or later are 0-28. Both angles count against Adonius one of the market leaders. Backing fillies who were foaled in March or earlier would have found eight winners from 27 bets for a profit of £6.28 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 4.31, A/E = 1.86) including five wins from nine runners for those drawn in stalls 1 or 2. Two of the four beaten horses also placed (10-1 and 11-2) and it could be worth taking a speculative each-way punt on Tom Dascombe’s Yahaira (stall 2 of 8), a perfect statistical fit, despite her tenth of 13 finish at Bath on last month’s debut.

4.45 Chester – Spangled Mac (0.5pt e/w – 33/1 Paddy Power, 25/1 generally, Sky Bet paying five places)

Surprisingly for a Chester handicap this 7f contest has been something of a graveyard for front-runners/prominent racers, with the last ten winners coming from midfield or further back (the last four winners were also drawn very high). This race should be run at a solid gallop thanks to the presence of Bell Shot in stall 2(“started quickly, led at fast pace” last time out), Goldmoyne in stall 3 (“prominent, pressed leaders 2f out”) and A War Eagle in stall 4 (“in touch with leaders” last time out though made all at Beverley the time before). Goldmoyne, a qualifier in the James Owen first-time visor system, and A War Eagle, who was on the wrong part of the track when fifth in last week’s Thirsk Hunt Cup, would have been interesting otherwise but I’m going to take them on. In the hope of another pace collapse I’m going to suggest that we back Spangled Mac (stall 10) for the in-form George Boughey and Billy Loughnane combination. The seven-year-old is usually placed late and he caught the eye in his sole previous course outing, staying on into mid-division in a 7.5f handicap in August 2024 when his wide draw and patient running style were a disadvantage. He’s 8lb lower today.

Fontwell Racing Tips (Wednesday 6 May 2026)

Fontwell hosts a six-race evening card on Wednesday. Andrew’s selection runs in the penultimate race.

7.42 Fontwell – Known Warrior (0.5pt e/w – 5/1 bet365)

Known Warrior has found some consistency since undergoing wind surgery late last year and he gave even-money favourite Shadowfax Of Rohan a fright when going down narrowly in a 2m novices’ handicap chase at Southwell in late March. Richard Bandey’s 5-1 chance did well to finish so close after jumping out to his right on the left-handed track and had 24 lengths to spare of third-placed Catchim. The six-year-old now has form figures over fences of 422 (0-3), today’s figure-of-eight track and the step up in trip to this extended 2m3f could also bring about improvement and Catchim boosted the form when scoring by 12 lengths on his next start.
