Chester Racing Tips (Friday 8 May 2026)

Eight races take place on Friday, with a 1.30pm start. The Chester Cup is the highlight at 3.05pm and Andrew has a brace of tips for the big race.

3.05 Chester – Team Player (1pt e/w – 16/1 William Hill, 14/1 generally) & Peaky Blinder (1pt e/w – 8/1 William Hill, bet365, each-way terms may vary, 7/1 generally)

Four-year-olds have a useful record in the Chester Cup, winning four of the past ten renewals from 24 runners (+£14.25 to a £1 level stake at SP) and they weren’t represented in 2016. I want to play both the four-year-olds in today’s Chester Cup, starting with the Ewan Whillans-trained Team Player. The son of Without Parole has a tricky draw in stall 12 but has improved significantly since joining his current handler from the Gemma Tutty yard, causing a 33-1 shock at Newcastle (2m), clocking a fast time in the process, and following up when 11-1 at Musselburgh (1m6f, soft). He has form on fast ground and is 1-1 at Chester.

Peaky Blinder (stall 2) is better berthed than Team Player and Andrew Balding’s gelding signed off last term with a 1m6f Redcar win, his first start beyond 1m6f, and followed up on last month’s reappearance at Southwell (2m) on the back of a gelding operation. Since the beginning of 2016, his trainer’s last time out winners who were having their second start since being gelded are 16 from 44 (36.7%) for a profit of £18.10 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 10.67, A/E = 1.50).

15:05 Ladbrokes Chester Cup (Heritage Handicap) (GBBPlus Race)

3.40 Chester – Rosenpur (0.5pt e/w – 8/1 bet365 five places, 17/2 Paddy Power, BetVictor, four places, 8/1 generally with the other firms paying first four)

Rosenpur went desperately close at Catterick on his penultimate when a bet for this column, the 5-1 shot getting caught on the line by the short-priced favourite and trading at 1.10 in running. The Jennie Candlish-trained six-year-old proved unsuited to the track when sixth of eight at Musselburgh next time and will be happier back on a left-handed course today. His combined record here and at Catterick when drawn in stall 5 or lower reads 2311322 (2-7) and another solid front-running effort looks in the offing with his stall 5 of 15 draw looking favourable.
