14:12 – Irish EBF Median Sires Series Race (IRE Incentive Race)

Race Details: 6f | | Going: GOOD, Good to firm in places (Watering) | | flat

This looks a useful little 2yo contest rather than a deep one, and the market has probably latched onto the right trio. Lars Soldier brings the standout level of achieved form after already getting his head in front and posting the best rating in the field, while Joga Bonito shaped with plenty of promise on debut and comes from a yard that can sharpen one up markedly from first to second start. Citrus Springs is the obvious unknown among the principals for Joseph O’Brien and has to be respected on debut, but taking short prices about newcomers in races like this is not always my idea of fun. Tatianna sets a fair standard for the each-way players, especially with race experience and a handy weight allowance. It is not an impossible puzzle, but there are enough unexposed types to stop it being a penalty kick.

Top Selections

1. Lars Soldier – 2/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Wesley Joyce | Trainer: Michael Mulvany | Form: 415 | Rating: 93 | Topspeed: 92

He sets the bar on what we know already. A mark of 93 and Topspeed of 92 are clear signals that this colt has shown a level the others still have to reach, and his form figures suggest he has been learning quickly rather than standing still. The slight concern is that this is not a penalty-free world for experienced juveniles when smart debutants arrive, but six furlongs on decent ground should play to his strengths and stall 5 looks perfectly workable. At around 2/1, he is not wildly overpriced, but he is solid, race-fit and brings the strongest body of evidence. In a race where a few are trading on potential alone, that makes him hard to oppose. Bet type: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Tatianna – 12/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Jack Cleary | Trainer: Josh Halley | Form: 3 | Rating: 79 | Topspeed: 61

For an each-way angle, Tatianna makes plenty of appeal at double-figure odds. She was third on debut, which is often a very fair effort in these early-season juvenile races, and that opening rating of 79 gives her a realistic platform to build on. She also gets in here with just 123, which matters against a few of the better-fancied colts carrying more. This might simply come a bit too soon for one of the blue-blooded newcomers to turn out above average, but if the principals run to form rather than suddenly leap forward, she looks the type to nick a place. At 12/1, she is the value each-way punt in the line-up. Bet type: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Lars Soldier is the straightforward win play because he has already posted the best figures in the field and does not need guesswork attached to him. For a saver at bigger odds, Tatianna appeals each-way with debut form, a fair opening mark and a nice racing weight. Joga Bonito is the obvious danger if improving as expected, while Citrus Springs is the wildcard newcomer to monitor closely in the market.

14:42 – Royal County Optional Claiming Race

Race Details: 6f | | Going: GOOD, Good to firm in places (Watering) | | flat

This doesn’t look a deep optional claimer and, on the face of it, Gloriously Glam sets a pretty clear standard. Adrian McGuinness’s filly arrives off a win, has the best official mark in the field on 77 and is the only runner who comes here looking remotely progressive. That said, she’s short enough in a race where a few exposed sprinters could still make life awkward if the pace gets messy. Profit Surge has been knocking on the door and looks the obvious one to chase the favourite home, while Spirit Of Eagles is at least coming off a better effort and has a rider in W J Lee who can make a difference in these smaller-field sprints. Not a strong race, then, but not completely bombproof for the favourite either.

Top Selections

1. Gloriously Glam – 8/11 with Bet365

Jockey: Adam Caffrey | Trainer: Adrian McGuinness | Form: 9-0481 | Rating: 77 | Topspeed: 65

She’s the solid one. That latest success put her right on top of this field from a form and ratings perspective, and there simply isn’t another runner in here with her combination of current wellbeing and raw ability. The draw in stall 1 should suit a straightforward 6f assignment, and her topspeed figure of 65 is also the best on offer. Adam Caffrey gets on well with these sharp types and McGuinness is exactly the kind of trainer you expect to place one well in a race of this nature. At 8/11 she’s no giveaway, but she is hard to oppose on what we know. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Profit Surge – 4/1 with Paddy Power

Jockey: Colin Keane | Trainer: Gerard Keane | Form: -36632 | Rating: 68 | Topspeed: 42

If you want something to play against the favourite each-way, Profit Surge makes most appeal. He’s been threatening to nick one, finishing second last time after a string of respectable efforts, and this isn’t a race packed with unexposed lurkers. Colin Keane is an eye-catching booking in a contest like this and the horse gets in with a workable 134. He does need to find plenty on the figures with Gloriously Glam, but consistency counts for plenty in low-grade sprints and 4/1 looks fair for a runner who should be bang there again if reproducing his latest effort. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Keep it simple: Gloriously Glam is the win play and the one most likely to give you a clean run for your money. For an each-way angle in a 7-runner field, Profit Surge is the percentage call given his recent consistency and Colin Keane’s presence. Spirit Of Eagles is the main danger if building on his latest third, but the favourite still looks the one they all have to beat.

15:17 – Fiver Fridays At Fairyhouse June 5th And 12th Handicap

Race Details: 6f | | Going: GOOD, Good to firm in places (Watering) | | flat

This looks a properly competitive 3yo sprint handicap rather than a giveaway, with several arriving from different angles. Baiana brings the sexy profile after winning on her return and is entitled to more respect now tackling handicaps, while Treasured Royal shaped much better than the bare result when third last time and looks sure to be thereabouts again. Stone Bear is another with solid recent handicap form, and All Hail is one of the more interesting seasonal returners in the line-up. The race may come down to who improves most for the switch into this sharper 6f test on quick ground, and that makes it a slightly tricky puzzle rather than a race to get carried away in. Still, there are a couple that appeal at the prices.

Top Selections

1. Treasured Royal – 4/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Gary Carroll | Trainer: Gavin Cromwell | Form: 160-03 | Rating: 82 | Topspeed: 78

Treasured Royal makes plenty of appeal on the back of that latest third, which suggested he was coming to hand nicely after an ordinary reappearance. His juvenile form had enough substance to think a mark of 82 is workable, and the Cromwell yard rarely leaves much to chance with this type. Gary Carroll is a positive booking in a race where track position will matter, and stall 6 gives him options. He doesn’t have the obvious scope of one or two rivals, but he looks solid, straightforward and likely to run his race. At 4/1, he is the one I’d want onside to win.

Bet: WIN

2. All Hail – 11/2 with Bet365

Jockey: W J Lee | Trainer: A Oliver | Form: 082- | Rating: 84 | Topspeed: 59

All Hail is the each-way play because there is a fair chance he has a bit more to offer than we’ve seen so far. He signed off last season with a runner-up effort that hinted he was beginning to understand the job, and A Oliver’s 3yos can take a step forward from two to three. The slight concern is the widest draw in 10, but W J Lee is the sort you trust to make a sensible fist of it. He has fewer miles on the clock than some of these and could easily prove better than his current mark of 84. At 11/2, he looks a fair each-way punt in a race with depth but no standout monster.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Treasured Royal is the win bet after shaping like a horse ready to strike next time, and this looks a suitable opportunity. All Hail is the each-way alternative, especially if you think natural progression will kick in at three. Baiana is the obvious danger after her comeback win, while Stone Bear also deserves respect if continuing his upward curve.

15:47 – 5 Euro General Admission Next Friday Handicap

Race Details: 6f | | Going: GOOD, Good to firm in places (Watering) | | flat

This is a proper cavalry charge with 21 runners and, for all that the grade doesn’t scream quality, there are plenty with bits and pieces of form that make them interesting. Happy Henry is the obvious starting point after a string of solid efforts and he arrives as the one with the least to prove, but he’s hardly thrown in off 64 and won’t get this all his own way. Whatswrongnow comes here on the back of a much better run and looks one of the more likely dangers, while Rodeeve and El Fontenaro have enough recent promise to be involved if the race falls right. Draw and track position could matter in a field this big over 6f, so it feels more tricky puzzle than penalty kick.

Top Selections

1. Happy Henry – 7/2 with Bet365

Jockey: W J Lee | Trainer: W McCreery | Form: 7-3523 | Rating: 64 | Topspeed: 51

He’s the percentage call. Happy Henry has been knocking on the door, finishing third on his last start after earlier efforts of second and third, and that sort of consistency stands out in a race full of unreliable sprinters. W J Lee is a positive booking and McCreery’s runners are always worth a second look in these handicaps when they find a workable mark. He doesn’t look miles ahead of the assessor, but he’s running like a horse ready to strike and this sharper 6f test should suit. At 7/2 he isn’t a giveaway, but he still makes plenty of appeal as the most solid option in the field. Bet type: win.

Bet: WIN

2. El Fontenaro – 10/1 with Paddy Power

Jockey: Ronan Whelan | Trainer: Jarlath P Fahey | Form: 5066-4 | Rating: 62 | Topspeed: 61

El Fontenaro looks the each-way value. His return fourth was a step back in the right direction and, crucially, his Topspeed figure of 61 is one of the better numbers on offer in this line-up. Off 62 he’s not obviously badly treated, and there’s enough evidence in his profile that a strongly-run 6f on decent ground can bring out a competitive effort. He doesn’t have the sexy profile of an improver, but this isn’t the race for one to be essential; often it just takes a well-handicapped, streetwise sprinter to hit the frame. Available at 10/1, he makes plenty of each-way sense in a race paying five places.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Happy Henry is the straightforward win play because he brings the cleanest recent form and looks the most dependable finisher. For an each-way punt, El Fontenaro appeals at double-figure odds with five places on offer and enough recent encouragement to think he can outrun his price. The main dangers look to be Whatswrongnow, who arrives off a good second, and Rodeeve, who is better than his bare form suggests.

16:17 – Book Your Hospitality At Fairyhouse.ie Handicap

Race Details: 7f | | Going: GOOD, Good to firm in places (Watering) | | flat

This looks a proper 3yo handicap rather than a gimme, with several arriving after solid recent runs and not much between the principals on official figures. Kc Bear sets a fair standard after a winning finish to last season and a good return when second, while Royal County Glory comes here on the back of a confidence-boosting win and still looks feasibly treated. Venetian Star and Fortuity also have claims after shaping well lately, and One Cool Bear is the lurker if reproducing his better speed figure. It feels the sort of race where a handy draw and a smooth trip will matter plenty over this 7f, and while there are a few unexposed types, this is more tricky than strong. You could make a case for four or five, which usually means price sensitivity is key.

Top Selections

1. Kc Bear – 3/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Colin Keane | Trainer: Noel Meade | Form: 8831-2 | Rating: 72 | Topspeed: 20

Kc Bear looks the one to beat. He signed off last year with a win and returned from a break with a solid second, which reads well in the context of this race because he still appears to be moving the right way. A mark of 72 is hardly punitive for a 3yo open to a bit more improvement, and stall 6 should allow Colin Keane to get him into a handy rhythm without fuss. In a race full of runners with bits and pieces of form, he is one of the few with a straightforward profile and obvious momentum. Available at 3/1, he is no giveaway, but he still holds strong claims. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Fortuity – 6/1 with Paddy Power

Jockey: Shane Foley | Trainer: Mrs John Harrington | Form: 799-02 | Rating: 72 | Topspeed: 59

Fortuity makes plenty of each-way appeal after taking a step back in the right direction when runner-up last time. That was easily his best effort of the year and the topspeed figure of 59 says he has the pace to be competitive in a race like this. Shane Foley is a positive booking for a yard that knows how to place one when the handicap mark is workable, and 72 gives him every chance if he can build on that latest run rather than bounce off it. At 6/1, he is priced as one of the main players without being cramped, which makes him the value alternative to the favourite. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Kc Bear is the win play because his profile is the cleanest and he looks progressive enough to cope with this mark. Fortuity is the each-way option in a 13-runner race with four places on offer, as his latest second suggests he is coming to the boil. The obvious danger is Royal County Glory, who arrives in winning form and is drawn to get involved again.

16:52 – Racing Again Next Friday Apprentice Handicap

Race Details: 1m 1f | | Going: GOOD, Good to firm in places (Watering) | | flat

This is a proper apprentice handicap puzzle rather than a race to get carried away with, and there are several with plausible claims if things fall right. Smithfield looks the solid one after a respectable return, while Doctor Grace arrives on the back of a win and Casheldale Lass shaped like one ready to strike when second last time. Lower down the weights, She’s Ideal has been knocking on the door and could easily outrun her mark again, while Moyassr has the raw speed figures to get involved if settling better. In a 16-runner field over this trip, position and timing will matter plenty, and it would be no surprise if something waited with off the pace came sweeping late. Tricky, competitive, but not impossible.

Top Selections

1. Smithfield – 4/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Sam Coen | Trainer: Gavin Cromwell | Form: 4870-4 | Rating: 77 | Topspeed: 58

Smithfield makes most appeal as the win play. He was not beaten far on his return when fourth after a break, and that run had the look of a proper sighter rather than a missed opportunity. Gavin Cromwell’s runners are rarely thrown in blind, and this 4-year-old still has the profile of one who can do a bit better in handicaps over this sort of trip. A mark of 77 looks workable enough in this company, and Sam Coen is a capable booking for a horse who should be ridden with confidence. At 4/1 with Bet365, he is no giveaway, but he does look the likeliest winner if building on that latest effort.

Bet: WIN

2. She’s Ideal

Jockey: Sadhbh Tormey | Trainer: Paul W Flynn | Form: 94-424 | Rating: 71 | Topspeed: 64

She’s Ideal is the each-way angle in a race where plenty have questions to answer. Her recent form is honest rather than flashy, but in these big-field handicaps that often counts for plenty. She has twice finished runner-up this season and didn’t run badly at all when fourth latest, suggesting she is holding her form well and remains on a fair mark of 71. The topspeed figure of 64 says she has enough pace to be competitive at this level, and there is a strong chance this extra test at 1m1f will suit. She is the sort to travel kindly and keep finding, which makes her very interesting for place purposes.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Smithfield is the percentage call for the win bet after a pleasing reappearance and looks the one with the fewest holes in his profile. She’s Ideal is the each-way punt in a race paying five places, with her consistency making plenty of appeal. The obvious dangers are Doctor Grace, who comes here in winning form, and Casheldale Lass, who looks ready to go very close again.

17:27 – Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Maiden

Race Details: 1m 1f | | Going: GOOD, Good to firm in places (Watering) | | flat

This looks a fairly tidy little seven-runner maiden rather than a deep one, and the market has every right to focus on the obvious quartet. Mai Dahlia sets the standard on ratings after a promising debut third, while Guardian Of Realm already has the benefit of experience and had been knocking on the door before a slightly disappointing return. Mathoura also shaped with plenty of promise first time up and is entitled to improve for the extra furlong, while Mandara Mist comes from the Twomey yard and doesn’t need much introduction on debut in a race of this type. The rest have a bit to find on what they’ve shown. In truth, this looks like a race where latent improvement will decide it, and that makes it interesting despite the small field.

Top Selections

1. Mai Dahlia – 13/8 with Betfair

Jockey: J M Sheridan | Trainer: Joseph Patrick O’Brien | Form: 3 | Rating: 92 | Topspeed: 50

Mai Dahlia appeals as the one with the most solid mix of ability and upside. A debut third that earned a 92 rating is a smart starting point in a maiden of this shape, and that Topspeed figure of 50 is the best on offer as well. Joseph O’Brien’s fillies often come forward sharply from first to second run, and the step up to 1m1f looks likely to suit rather than stretch her. She doesn’t have to find a huge amount to take this, and at 13/8 she is short enough but still looks the percentage call against rivals who either need to bounce back or prove themselves. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Mathoura – 7/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Shane Foley | Trainer: Mrs John Harrington | Form: 2 | Rating: 85 | Topspeed: 31

Mathoura is the each-way angle in a race where the front end of the market is pretty compact. She was second on debut, which immediately gives her a respectable platform, and you’d expect natural progress from the Harrington yard after that initial outing. The official figure of 85 leaves her with a bit to find on Mai Dahlia, but not an impossible amount, and this extra trip could easily unlock a little more. Shane Foley is a positive booking for this sort of patient, measured ride, and 7/2 looks fair enough if you think she can step forward again. In a seven-runner maiden, she’s the one I’d want onside for an each-way punt. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Keep it straightforward. Mai Dahlia is the win bet because she brings the best rating, the best speed figure and the most persuasive recent form. Mathoura is the each-way alternative at a workable price, especially if the market continues to concentrate on the top two or three. Guardian Of Realm is the obvious danger if bouncing back, while Mandara Mist is the debutante to respect.
