Day 1 of Glorious Goodwood takes place on Tuesday 28th July with a stunning opening day’s racing on the south coast. Steve Chambers takes a look through the form and picks out his four best bets, which can make up the GG Lucky 15 for the day.
Glorious Goodwood Day 1 Tips (Tuesday 28th July 2026)
Eight races make up day 1 of Glorious Goodwood, with the action kicking off at 1.50pm. Group 1 action comes in the shape of the Goodwood Cup, whilst the Lennox Stakes and Vintage Stakes are a brace of Group 2 races on the card.
1.50 Goodwood – Rathgar (1pt win – 14/1)
Jack Channon’s Rathgar defeated Sallaal at Epsom in a quality handicap earlier in the season. That form has been given a huge boost with the progression of Sallaal, who was last seen winning a listed event. Rathgar may not hold the same potential as Sallaal, but he ran creditably last time out when third at Sandown. This is another tough assignment, but he runs off the same mark of 94 in this event and he could run a huge race at big odds.
2.25 Goodwood – Al Hudaiba (1pt win – 13/8)
A winner of the Group 2 Superlative Stakes at Newmarket last time out, Al Hudaiba can follow that success up with another Group 2 win in the Vintage Stakes at 2.25pm. Charlie Appleby’s Dark Angel colt was mightily impressive in the closing stages of that race over seven furlongs and scooted to the front late on. He will have to give 3lbs to all his rivals for that win, but the Godolphin raider shaped like every bit a potential Classic contender next season and can continue on an upward curve with a win here. Around a 20/1 shot for the 2000 Guineas, he’s one that could slash in the Classic betting following this event.
3.35 Goodwood – Scandinavia (1pt win – 10/11)
Gold Cup one-two Scandinavia and Trawlerman do battle in a vintage renewal of the Goodwood Cup at 3.35pm. The two top-class stayers dominate the betting and it could be a finish that has a similar look to that one at Royal Ascot. New kid on the block Scandinavia has been a real revelation for Aidan O’Brien and he showed last season when landing this prize that he can deliver the goods at Goodwood. Trawlerman could look to kick clear off the front, but Scandinavia is sure to be reeling him in the closing stages, and he can do so with aplomb on Tuesday.
4.10 Goodwood – Run Boy Run (1pt win – 12/1)
A fine winner of the Ayr Gold Cup last season, Run Boy Run then went on to claim Group success in Meydan. Richard Spencer’s charge will now try to claim more handicap success when running in the 4.10pm race. He’s 7lbs higher than his Ayr success, but exciting jockey Toby Moore will take 7lbs off his back in this contest, so that has to give him a huge chance. Fourth last time out at Ascot, that should have him primed for a tilt at this even, which is another tough betting heat for punts
