The Group 1 Sussex Stakes is the feature race of the day, with Bow Echo, Gstaad and Opera Ballo set for an epic clash. Our in-house tipster Steve Chambers previews the second day of the Qatar Goodwood Festival and picks out his four best bets to make up the GG Lucky 15 for Wednesday’s racing.
Glorious Goodwood Day 2 Tips (Wednesday 29th July 2026)
It’s a 1.50pm start for day 2 of Goodwood, with seven races concluding at 5.40pm. The Group 1 Sussex Stakes is the feature race of the day at 4.10pm. Check out our best bets here…
1.50 Goodwood – Hatteen (1pt win – 11/4)
Having finished second at Newbury and Nottingham, Andrew Balding’s Hatteen finally broke his maiden tag last time out when scooting to a four-and-a-quarter length victory at Doncaster. Hugely impressive that day off a mark of 82, the Lope De Vega colt will need to defy a 6lbs rise following that St Leger Trial win, but could go in again in the opening race at Goodwood at 1.50pm. He now ventures into handicaps for the first time in this event, so it’s going to be tougher. However, the manner in which he beat his rivals that day suggest he could be a very smart stayer in the making, and he can kick off day two with a dominant win.
3.00 Goodwood – Planet Seeker (1pt win – 8/1)
Ralph Beckett’s Planet Seeker made a mockery of her opening handicap mark of 85 when easing to a three-and-a-half length win at Newmarket a few weeks ago. Now, Beckett’s progressive performer will look to defy the step up into Group 3 company and claim Goodwood glory in the 3.00pm event. The daughter of Blue Point will need to continue on an upward curve, and with Jamie Spencer in the saddle then she’s sure to be produced late. If she can avoid any notable traffic problems then she has to be regarded a leading contender, and she’s the selection.
3.35 Goodwood – Pershaada (1pt win – 4/1)
A winner over course and distance back in May, Richard Hannon’s Pershaada will return to the scene of her only victory in the Molecomb Stakes at 3.35pm. She built on that Goodwood win with a fine fourth place finish in the Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot last month. She finished just ahead of Crownbreaker that day, and the pair will do battle again here. In a wide open contest, Pershaada is sure to benefit from the experience of winning at the track, and she is certainly one that can claim this Group contest before going on to bigger and better things.
4.10 Goodwood – Zavateri (1pt win – 20/1)
Bow Echo is entitled to be a hot favourite for the Sussex Stakes at 4.10pm, and he’s likely to be able to frank the form with Gstaad here. Opera Ballo is a classy four-year-old miler that could look to upset the apple cart, but there’s a big-priced runner that could land a significant blow here. Eve Johnson Houghton’s Zavateri won the Vintage Stakes over six furlongs at this meeting 12 months ago, and could spring a shock here. He will be having his first try at a mile here, so stamina is a worry. However, this could turn into a tactical affair with them looking to take Bow Echo into a sprint. If that’s the case then Zavateri can show his blistering turn of foot to land the prize.
