Glorious Goodwood Day 4 Racing Tips - Andrew Mount's Best Bets for Friday 31 July

Andrew Mount focuses his attention on day four of Glorious Goodwood, which takes place on Friday 31st July. He has four selections across today’s stunning racing, which includes a host of each-way picks.

Glorious Goodwood Racing Tips (Friday 31 July 2026)

It’s a 1.50pm start at Goodwood with eight races lighting up the south coast track. The King George Stakes is the feature Group 2 race of the day, but Andrew focuses on the handicap races today.

1.50 Goodwood – Alphonse Le Grande (0.5pt e/w – 11/1 William Hill, 10/1 general) & Believitanducan (0.5pt e/w – 11/2 bet365, William Hill)

The form of the Northumberland Vase (the consolation race for the Northumberland Plate) – run in a fast time – is working out well, including a subsequent win for sixth-placed favourite Shrimp Shady and a narrow 12-1 Galway second for 14th-placed Day Trader, trained by Tony Martin. The Irish handler also had three-length fifth Alphonse Le Grande in that 2m contest and the 2024 Cesarewitch winner can be supported for today’s 2m5f Goodwood Handicap, started by stalls this year rather than the usual flag start. His trainer’s Flat runners in Britain are profitable to back blind (13 from 103, +£18.00 to a £1 level stake at SP) and he’s on the same handicap mark as for his Cesarewitch win.

Charging Thunder also ran in the Northumberland Vase, finishing 11th of the 20 runners but is out to 75.0 on Betfair and the other one to back from that race is winner Believitanducan. Alan King’s five-year-old, a triple winner over hurdles, has proved very consistent in handicaps on the Flat, recording form figures of 32212111 (4-8), including figures of 2111(3-4) for his current handler.

13:50 Coral Goodwood Handicap (GBBPlus Race)

3.00 Goodwood – Indalo (1pt e/w – 11/2 bet365, 5/1 general)

Since 2015 (11 renewals) simply backing all runners drawn between stalls one and six in the Golden Mile would have found nine winners from 66 bets (13.6% strike-rate) for a profit of £10.25 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected wins = 5.19, A/E = 1.73). Those who were fourth or lower in the weights were nine from 58 (+£18.25). With Beagle Bay out because of the very fast going I’m going to stick with Indalo, who did this column a favour when successful at Sandown on his latest outing.

Roger Varian’s consistent five-year-old has career form figures of 1135241412231(5-13), with the sole out-of-the-frame effort excusable on account of missing the break from a poor draw at Nottingham. It will be disappointing if he isn’t in the first four from stall five (once the non-runners are taken into account). Two Tempting is poorly drawn (now stall 12 after the non-runners) but he ran well in this race in 2024 and, in a race lacking obvious pace among the low draws, could out-tun his odds. I’ve had a saver.

15:00 Coral Golden Mile (Heritage Handicap)

4.45 Goodwood – Clash Of Hearts (1pt e/w – 8/1 general)

Clash Of Hearts challenged in the slowest part of the track when a 16-1 third (promoted to second) at York on his debut in mid-May and was drawn wider than ideal and a solid one-length 18-1 third in a Class 2 conditions contest at Beverley next time. The step up0 to 6f for the first time brought improvement at Pontefract last month where he slammed Regal Tiger (subsequently a close second in a nursery) by five lengths. That form was also boosted by the third, La Fuerza, who won a Wolverhampton maiden at 11-1 on his next outing. and his opening handicap mark of 85 looks more than fair.

16:45 Hawes & Curtis Nursery Handicap
