Glorious Goodwood moves to day four on Friday 31st August, with another competitive day’s racing taking place at the south coast track. The Group 2 King George Stakes is the feature race of the day, whilst the Group 3 Thoroughbred Stakes is another highlight on the card. Steve Chambers takes a look at the form and picks out his best bets for day four of the meeting, as he picks out his Lucky 15 selections.
Glorious Goodwood Day 4 Tips (Friday 31st July 2026)
Eight races begin at 1.50pm, with the action going right through until 5.55pm. Here are the best bets of the day at Goodwood.
3.00 Goodwood – Scoville (1pt win – 9/1)
Seventh in the Royal Hunt Cup, Scoville can build on that effort and claim victory in the Golden Mile Handicap at 3.00pm. The William Haggas-trained raider lines up off the same mark for this contest, and whilst a wide draw isn’t ideal, he’s one that has potential to improve on his current figure of 98. He was on the opposite side to the winner in the Hunt Cup, so his performance can be given a boost from that. He contested a Group 3 earlier in his career, so connections feel that he has the potential to land a blow in that company, so has to be respected in this competitive handicap. If Tom Marquand can get in a handy position turning for home then he’s one that could kick clear and hold on from closers.
3.35 Goodwood – Time For Sandals (1pt win – 16/1)
Night Raider has been a revelation this season and is fancied to land the King George Stakes at 3.35pm, but Karl Burke’s speedster will have to give weight to all his rivals. The sprint division is wide open with the likes of last year’s winner Jm Jungle, American Affair and recent winner Rumstar all having a notable chance. However, it’s worth taking a chance on a sprinter that’s been struggling of late in the shape of Time For Sandals. Harry Eustace’s speedster was a shock winner of the Commonwealth Cup last season, and the four-year-old filly followed that up when finishing third in this race. She’s been struggling all season, but a return to Goodwood could bring her back to her best. If she can produce her best form then she’s certainly not a contender that should be double-figured odds, so take a chance on her.
4.10 Goodwood – Crown Of Oaks (1pt win – 11/1)
A fascinating conditions event takes place at 4.10pm, with a host of older horses having shown decent quality on the track during their careers. One that could go under the radar is Crown Of Oaks for the aforementioned pairing of Haggas and Marquand. A winner of the Balmoral Handicap at Ascot at the end of last season, he was last seen finishing last of seven in a Group 3 race at the Curragh. The son of Wootton Bassett is on the comeback mission here, but having shown some top form last season, he’s potentially worth another go in this. Plenty line up with chances, but Crown Of Oaks is a runner that could make into a Pattern performer at some point.
5.20 Goodwood – Into The Light (1pt win – 9/2)
Well fancied for the King George V Stakes at Royal Ascot, Into The Light failed to land any sort of blow in that event. However, the Charlie Appleby-trained raider can bounce back to form with a bang and win the 5.20pm at Goodwood. Prior to that Ascot flop he was a very promising second at Sandown, where he chased home subsequent Royal Ascot Golden Gates and London Gold Cup hero Lost Boys. That is top notch handicap form, and if he can replicate that effort then has to be respected here. He will certainly come on for that Ascot run, having had a break prior to it, so if he can replicate his early season form then he should be able to outclass his rivals in this contest.
