Goodwood Racing Tips (Saturday 2 May 2026)
It’s an early start at Goodwood, with their eight-race card kicking off at 12.55pm. Andrew heads to the listed event at 2.05pm for his selections, where he throws two darts the fillies’ event.
2.05 Goodwood – Arisaig (1pt win – 7-1 generally) & Betty Clover (0.5pt e/w – 33/1 generally)
Three of the six runners in the Listed Conqueror Stakes are making their seasonal debuts after contesting Group 1 contests on their final 2025 starts and might just be using this as a prep for bigger targets at the likes of Royal Ascot. In the hope/expectation that Blue Bolt, She’s Perfect and Kon Tiki are not fully wound up I’m going to play Arisaig and Better Clover who both like this track. The first-named has course figures of 153 (1-3), with the fifth place when meeting trouble in this race last year and the third place by just three-quarters of a length in a Group 2. Better Clover was beaten by a nose when 14-1 for this race last year and usually runs well in then spring, recording form figures of 121425 (2-6).
Newmarket Racing Tips (Saturday 2 May 2026)
Newmarket host a quality Flat card on 2000 Guineas day. It’s the colts’ Classic that Andrew focuses on and he has a brace of huge-priced selections for the 3.35pm main event.
3.35 Newmarket – Padraig Dawn (0.5pt e/w – 66/1 bet365, four places) & Venetian Prince (150/1 with Coral and Ladbrokes, three places, though 125-1 four places with BetVictor might be a better option)
They bet 7-2 the field in the 2000 Guineas and, while I can make cases for several runners, the first of two speculative recommendations is Padraig Dawn, who makes his turf debut after two recent eye-catching efforts on the all-weather. Charlie Pike’s son of Saxon Warrior missed the break and ran green when well backed for a 7f Southwell novice contest in late February but still won going away. Upped to Listed company and a mile at Newcastle next time, he went down narrowly in second place at 18-1, emerging clear best of the closers and earning a solid speed rating and a sectional upgrade from Proform. He’s the fourth fastest in the line-up according to their figures and while the market principals, yet to run at three, can be expected to improve on their juvenile figures, it still makes offers of 50-1+ look good value.
The other dart has landed on Venetian Prince, who was sent off at just 15-2 in Distant Storm’s (5-6f) July Course maiden. He ran green that day but showed promise to finish sixth of the 12 runners and won at Newbury next time. Runner-up efforts at Southwell/Kempton followed and though only fourth to Oxagon in the Craven he was asked to come from the rear on a paced-favouring track and, as he often does, hung to the left in the closing stages. The first-time cheekpieces could help – they are also a profitable angle where Andrew Balding runners are concerned – and if he does shift left he could end up on the near side rail from his high draw which might prove advantageous.
Thirsk Racing Tips (Saturday 2 May 2026)
It’s a 1.35pm start at Thirsk on Saturday on Thirsk Hunt Cup day. Andrew fancies a Kevin Ryan charge to claim victory in the 4.25pm race.
4.25 Thirsk – Vantheman (1pt win – 17/2 bet365)
Since the beginning of 2015, Kevin Ryan is six from 28 record with blinkered first-time runners in handicaps when ridden by Shane Gray (+£44.00 to a £1 level stake at SP) and there’s a good chance that Vantheman can bounce back to winning ways in the headgear. The five-year-old was only seventh of 13 when a 7-1 chance at Pontefract on his turf return last time but was ridden patiently from a high draw when it was vital to race up with the pace, ideally from a low berth.
Doncaster Racing Tips (Saturday 2 May 2026)
There’s an evening Flat fixture at Doncaster on Saturday evening. Andrew looks to end the day in fine style and picks out his best bet in the 6.27pm contest.
6.27 Doncaster – Rousing Encore (1pt win – )
The small field and lack of a guaranteed strong gallop is of some concern for Rousing Encore, but I can’t let him go unbacked now that he drops down to Class 3 level after an eyecatcher in the hot Class 2 handicap won by Double Rush in a very fast time at Newmarket. Ruth Carr’s six-year-old kept on from the rear to finish an 18-1 fifth of 13 that day and had also run well from off the pace when runner-up at the same price at Newcastle on his seasonal return.He’s run well in all three previous visits to Doncaster, finishing third of 15 (beaten by a neck at 16-1), fourth of 12 (14-1) and third of 22 (beaten by three-quarters of a length at 22-1), all of which took place in Class 2 company.
