Goodwood Racing Tips (Saturday 23 May 2026)
Andrew has a couple to back against the field in this competitive handicap.
1.25 Goodwood – Ironwill (1pt e/w – 6/1 bet365, Hills, Paddy Power) & Aquabear (0.5pt e/w – 50-1 generally)
This 7f handicap has been a low-draw benefit and simply backing all those runners drawn in stall 6 or lower would have hit ten of the previous 12 winners and made a profit of £21.50 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 6.76, A/E = 1.48). A top five finish last time out has also been a good pointer and combining these two angles gives us ten winners from 53 bets for a profit of £40.50. There are five qualifiers today – Startled, Catullus, Aqua Bear, Pathein (though top weights have a poor record), Cool Molly and Ironwill, with strong preference for the last-named who caught the eye when keeping on from off the pace to finished fifth of 13 in a hot Newmarket handicap last time. Today’s 7f trip is new territory but he shapes as though it will suit.
Of the others I can resist a small interest on Aqua Bear. Ian Williams’ gelding turned a good draw in stall 7 of 10 into a bad one when challenging far side of centre over the straight 7f at Ascot last time, only losing out to the trio who stayed stands’ side from stall 10, 8 and 9. This track could suit and he looks over-priced.
York Racing Tips (Saturday 23 May 2026)
Andrew has found a couple of selections to back on the Knavesmire on Saturday afternoon.
3.50 York – Bye Law (0.5pt e/w – 16/1 generally)
I wrote the following piece about Bye Law after his sixth place in a 5f handicap at Beverely on May 4th…
“BYE LAW (stall 12 of 14 once adjusted for the non-runners) was inconvenienced by his wide draw in the 5f Class 5 handicap and his best-of-the-closers sixth of 14 was a solid effort in the circumstances. The first three home were drawn in stalls 4 (“made all”), 1 (“prominent against far rail”) and 2 (“in touch with leaders”), racing on the front end from their favourable draws and were arguably flattered. Eighth-placed HOUNDHILL (stall 9) was another who performed with credit against the draw/pace bias.”
Houndhill landed a gamble at Newcastle earlier this week and while Bye Law has yet to race over today’s 7f trip (both his wins came at 6f) but he’ll certainly appreciate the step up from the minimum distance and is worth a small each-way interest.
4.25 York – Pearl River (1pt win – 9/1 generally)
Newbury’s London Gold Cup Handicap usually works out well and, since the 2010 renewal, simply backing all horses who ran in that 1m2f Class 2 contest on their next start would have found 32 winners from 166 bets (19.3% strike-rate) for a profit of £49.50 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 23.34, A/E = 1.37). Four of the 13 horses who made the running were successful next time (+£20.25) and that makes Richard Hannon’s Pearl River of obvious interest in this Class 4 handicap. The Cotai Glory colt did too much too soon that day, earning a sectional times upgrade and he won at Nottingham last autumn on his latest run in this grade. Moment Of Light, best of the closers when fourth at Chester last time, looks the main danger and I’ll be having a stake saver.
Haydock Racing Tips (Saturday 23 May 2026)
Andrew has a brace of selections for this long distance handicap.
4.05 Haydock – Hermetic (0.5pt e/w – 13/2 Sky Bet, Paddy Power) & Pole Star (0.5pt e/w – 7/2 generally)
This 2m handicap usually goes to a four-year-old, with that age group landing seven of the past ten renewals (from 32 runners) for a profit of £6.40 to a £1 level stake at SP. There are only three of them this term and one is top weight Venezulean and those carrying the most weight have fared poorly. I’m happy to back the remaining duo each-way. Ian Williams’ Hermetic wasn’t best drawn when a solid 20-1 fourth of 17 to Master Builder at York on his recent stable debut and he also did plenty of running early in a race set up for those ridden more patiently.
Course and distance winner Pole Star will be happier back at this venue after his respectable third in a heritage handicap at Newmarket last time and remains open to improvement on only his third run since a gelding operation.
