16:15 – Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden

Race Details: 7f | | Going: SOFT | | flat

This looks a fairly informative juvenile maiden rather than a raffle, with the standout piece of form belonging to Folsom Blues after his debut third. An official rating of 86 already sets a solid standard for this field and, in truth, most of these have either shown very little or are complete unknowns. Anthony Of Lisbon is the obvious threat from a yard that routinely improves its two-year-olds for a first run, while Joseph O’Brien also saddles a couple of interesting newcomers in King’s Fury and Wo Wo Never. Soft ground over 7f at Gowran will ask a proper question of these babies, so experience and the ability to see it out should count for plenty. On what we know, the favourite is hard to get away from.

Top Selections

1. Folsom Blues – 4/5 with Bet365

Jockey: Dylan Browne McMonagle | Trainer: Joseph Patrick O’Brien | Form: 3 | Rating: 86 | Topspeed: 43

Folsom Blues sets the clear form standard and doesn’t need much imagination to see him taking a big step forward from that debut third. A mark of 86 is miles ahead of what any of the exposed rivals have managed, and that Topspeed figure of 43 backs up the substance of the run. Joseph O’Brien’s juveniles are rarely overcooked first time, so natural improvement is the obvious angle, and the move to 7f on soft ground should suit if he finished his race off as his bare form suggests. At 4/5 he is no gift, but he is the one with the most persuasive credentials and looks the likeliest winner.

Bet: WIN

2. Anthony Of Lisbon – 11/4 with Bet365

Jockey: Wayne Lordan | Trainer: A P O’Brien | Form: | Rating: | Topspeed:

If you’re looking beyond the favourite, Anthony Of Lisbon is the one that makes most appeal. Aidan O’Brien doesn’t send many juveniles to maidens at this time of year without expecting a proper run, and Wayne Lordan is a notable booking in that context. There is no racecourse evidence to work with, but in a field where the majority of the exposed runners have already posted modest numbers, a well-bred Ballydoyle newcomer at 11/4 has obvious each-way appeal despite the short enough price. He may lack the experience of Folsom Blues, but he has the right connections and could easily be the one to chase him home.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Keep it simple here. Folsom Blues is the percentage call on the strength of his debut and should be backed to win. Anthony Of Lisbon is the sensible each-way alternative in a race where most of the exposed opposition look limited. The main danger beyond those two could be one of the other O’Brien newcomers, particularly King’s Fury, if the market speaks in his favour.

16:50 – Golf At Gowran Park Handicap

Race Details: 7f | | Going: SOFT | | flat

This looks a proper 3yo handicap rather than a penalty kick, with plenty arriving from different angles and the soft ground adding another layer of uncertainty. Imnotleavinyou sets the standard on recent evidence after finally getting his head in front and he has the profile of one who can keep progressing despite a higher mark. Sagasti is respected for a yard that can place them well, while Apothic Red has been shaping as if a race like this is within reach. There are a few interesting lighter-weight types too, notably Pocket Jacks, who looks capable of better still. It is competitive rather than deep, and getting the trip strongly on this ground should be what decides it.

Top Selections

1. Imnotleavinyou – 3/1 with Bet365

Jockey: J M Sheridan | Trainer: Michael Mulvany | Form: -22291 | Rating: 75 | Topspeed: 64

He is hardly a hidden horse now, but that recent win was the performance of one who had been knocking loudly and deserved to get off the mark. The sequence of placed efforts beforehand reads well enough in the context of this race and his Topspeed figure of 64 is among the stronger pieces of evidence on offer here. From stall 6 he should get a fair crack at it, and J M Sheridan knows exactly how to ride a straightforward handicapper of this type. At 3/1 he is not a giveaway, but he is the most solid option in a race where several rivals still have questions to answer on either current form or attitude. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Pocket Jacks – 6/1 with Betfair

Jockey: Nathan Crosse | Trainer: A Oliver | Form: 97-63 | Rating: 69 | Topspeed: 58

This one makes plenty of each-way appeal. He has looked sharper the last twice, especially when third on his latest outing, and a mark of 69 still gives him room to manoeuvre if that small step forward turns into a bigger one now. He is nicely in at the weights with just 123 to carry, and in a 13-runner race on soft ground that can matter late on when others are treading water. Nathan Crosse should be able to switch him off and produce him at the right time. Available at 6/1, he looks the value play against the more obvious market leaders. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Imnotleavinyou is the win bet because he brings the strongest recent form and still looks on the upgrade. For an each-way punt, Pocket Jacks makes plenty of sense off a workable mark with four places on offer. The main danger is Apothic Red, while Sagasti is another who would not surprise if taking a step forward.

17:23 – Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Handicap

Race Details: 7f | | Going: SOFT | | flat

This is a tight little fillies’ handicap and not one to take lightly. Greydreambeliever sets the standard on consistency and it would be no surprise to see Joseph O’Brien’s mare heavily involved again, but she’s short enough in a race where a few arrive with upside. Luna Mia is particularly interesting back from a break after shaping well on return, while Solana Beach is the unexposed three-year-old in the line-up and gets in with a very handy weight. Rion Rubette comes here on the back of a win and clearly has to be respected, but this looks a deeper assignment. In truth, it feels more like a tactical, tricky puzzle than a straightforward punting heat, with the soft ground and weight differentials likely to sort plenty out.

Top Selections

1. Luna Mia – 5/1 with Betfair

Jockey: Jamie Powell | Trainer: M D O’Callaghan | Form: 2182-4 | Rating: 93 | Topspeed: 84

She makes plenty of appeal here. Luna Mia signed off last term with a solid second and her comeback fourth suggested she has trained on well enough, especially as that run should have blown away the cobwebs. For a three-year-old to come into this against older fillies off 123, with a respectable topspeed figure of 84, gives her a very workable profile. Jamie Powell knows how to deliver one late and this 7f on soft ground could be ideal if they go a fair clip. At 5/1, she looks the one with the right mix of class, scope and handicapping potential. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Solana Beach – 7/1 with Betfair

Jockey: Andrew Slattery | Trainer: J A Stack | Form: 24 | Rating: 98 | Topspeed: 63

She’s the interesting each-way play because there could easily be more to come after just two starts. Solana Beach has already shown enough in finishing second and fourth to suggest she belongs in this sort of company, and being a lightly raced three-year-old carrying only 119 immediately catches the eye. The draw in 9 is not ideal, but if Andrew Slattery can get her settled and into a rhythm, her relative freshness could count for plenty against rivals whose form is more exposed. The market is asking for trust at 7/1, but this is exactly the type who can take a sharp step forward in a race like this. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Luna Mia is the win play at around 5/1, with her recent return run making her look ready to strike. Solana Beach is the each-way alternative at 7/1, chiefly because she has the unexposed profile and a feather weight. Greydreambeliever is the obvious danger on proven form, while Rion Rubette is respected after that latest success.

17:58 – Societies Welcome At Gowran Park Golf Club Handicap

Race Details: 1m | | Going: SOFT | | flat

This is a typically messy Gowran mile handicap, the sort where recent placed form and a bit of tactical luck can matter more than raw ability. Mythical Rock and Miss Americana head the market for good reason, both arriving in solid nick, while Queen Aethelflaed and Chipsrdown also bring recent runner-up efforts that put them firmly in the argument. Soft ground adds another layer to it, especially in a 17-runner field where getting a smooth passage is never guaranteed. Real Petite comes here off a win and clearly has to be respected, but that was after some ordinary efforts and she is drawn wide. It does not look a deep race in quality terms, but it is definitely a tricky punting heat with several holding legitimate place claims.

Top Selections

1. Mythical Rock – 7/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Sam Coen | Trainer: C Byrnes | Form: -21762 | Rating: 64 | Topspeed: 43

Mythical Rock looks the percentage call. He has been holding his form well, winning earlier in the campaign and backing that up with placed efforts, including a latest second that reads perfectly well in a race of this nature. A mark of 64 does not look beyond him, the low draw in 4 should help around here, and C Byrnes runners are rarely turned out without purpose in these handicaps. He is not thrown in, but he is reliable, handles this sort of contest, and the 7/2 on offer is fair enough in a race where plenty of his rivals still have something to prove. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Chipsrdown – 13/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Andrew Slattery | Trainer: Andrew Slattery | Form: 03-502 | Rating: 58 | Topspeed: 54

For an each-way play, Chipsrdown makes plenty of appeal at the prices. He shaped well when second last time and that effort suggested he is ready to strike from a mark of 58 if things fall right. The Topspeed figure of 54 is one of the better numbers in the field, which catches the eye in a race lacking standout quality, and Andrew Slattery taking the ride for his own yard is no negative at all. He does need to show he can finish the job, but in a big field over a soft mile, 13/2 is perfectly fair for a horse with solid recent form and definite place prospects. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Mythical Rock is the win play because he brings the most convincing recent profile and looks hard to oppose if getting a clear run. Chipsrdown is the each-way punt in a race paying five places, with his latest second and useful Topspeed figure making him attractive at 13/2. Miss Americana and Queen Aethelflaed look the obvious dangers, while Real Petite is respected after that last-time-out win.

18:33 – Ladies Day July 25th Apprentice Handicap

Race Details: 1m 1f | | Going: SOFT | | flat

This small-field 3yo handicap looks competitive without being especially deep, and the market has understandably latched on to the solid recent profiles of Son Of Beauty and Rayzera. The former has already shown he can win a handicap and comes here from stall 1, while Rayzera has been knocking on the door and brings a slightly higher mark. Fallacy is interesting on the figures, with the best recent Topspeed bar one and the look of a horse still finding his level over this sort of trip. Soft ground at Gowran can put the emphasis on resolution rather than speed alone, so tactical positioning will matter in a six-runner race where nobody wants to get trapped. It is not a race full of hidden lurkers, but there is just enough depth to make it a proper betting heat.

Top Selections

1. Son Of Beauty – 15/8 with Bet365

Jockey: Jack Kearney | Trainer: Stephen Thorne | Form: 31653 | Rating: 81 | Topspeed: 61

Son Of Beauty makes the most appeal because his profile is the most convincing blend of reliability and upside. He won three starts back, has largely held his form since, and his latest third suggests he is still in the right groove rather than going backwards. The inside draw is another plus in a tactical little contest like this, and he does not need to improve dramatically to take this. At 15/8 he is hardly a rick, but he is the one with the fewest questions to answer and looks the percentage call against rivals who are either exposed or still a touch frustrating. Bet: WIN

2. Fallacy – 4/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Sam Coen | Trainer: Andrew Slattery | Form: 96-83 | Rating: 76 | Topspeed: 65

Fallacy looks the value angle if you want something against the favourite. He has come forward with each run this season, and that latest third hinted that this mark of 76 is workable now he is settling into handicaps a bit better. The Topspeed figure of 65 is a healthy one in the context of this race, and he gets in here with just 132, which should not hurt if this turns into a proper slog in the closing stages. Sam Coen rides plenty of winners in these apprentice events and this is the sort of progressive sort who can outrun a 4/1 quote if the front pair get racing too soon. Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Son Of Beauty is the straightforward win play in a race where solid recent handicap form may count for plenty. For an each-way punt, Fallacy makes more appeal than the shorter-priced alternatives because he still has scope from his current mark and arrives on an upward curve. Rayzera is the obvious danger after a string of good efforts, while Rapide Vega is the price outsider worth a second glance.

19:08 – Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Maiden

Race Details: 1m 1f | | Going: SOFT | | flat

This looks a useful enough maiden for Gowran, with several lightly raced fillies bringing solid placed form and a few powerful yards introducing unexposed types. Sangreal sets the standard on figures after finishing second and third, while Bofa Beach shaped well when third on her return and still has clear scope to come forward. Pink Coral has been steadily learning her job for Ballydoyle and is another with obvious claims, while Miss Romagna is unlikely to be far away if building again on her first two starts. The soft ground and this slightly testing 1m1f should put the emphasis on stamina rather than speed, and that may just tilt things towards the more battle-hardened fillies rather than the debutantes. Tricky enough, but not impossible to narrow down.

Top Selections

1. Sangreal – 4/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Dylan Browne McMonagle | Trainer: Joseph Patrick O’Brien | Form: 23 | Rating: 80 | Topspeed: 71

Sangreal brings the best combination of proven form and solid numbers into the race and she makes plenty of appeal back in maiden company over this sort of trip. An official mark of 80 and a Topspeed of 71 are the standout pieces of evidence in the field, and her two runs have already shown she knows how to compete. Joseph O’Brien’s filly doesn’t need guessing at in the dark; she has the substance on paper and looks the one most likely to handle a proper test on soft ground. At 4/1 with Bet365, she looks a fair rather than flashy price, but she is the percentage call. Bet: WIN

2. Miss Romagna – 15/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Donagh O’Connor | Trainer: W McCreery | Form: 62 | Rating: 77 | Topspeed: 46

Miss Romagna appeals as the each-way angle because she has already shown a nice bit of progression, improving from sixth on debut to finish second next time. That is often the profile you want in a race like this: a filly learning quickly and still open to another step forward. McCreery’s runners are usually well placed, and this one has a rating of 77, which leaves her right in the argument if she sees out the extra yardage strongly on soft ground. She may not have Sangreal’s raw figures, but she looks dependable and 15/2 with Bet365 is a perfectly fair each-way punt in a 15-runner maiden. Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Sangreal is the win play because she has the strongest body of form and the best figures in the field. Miss Romagna makes more sense as the each-way option at the prices, with progression on her side and a solid chance of hitting the frame. Bofa Beach and Pink Coral are the obvious dangers if taking another step forward, while any market move for the newcomers would be worth noting.

19:43 – Packages At www.gowranpark.ie Race

Race Details: 1m 1f | | Going: SOFT | | flat

This is a very small-field contest but not quite the penalty kick the market suggests. Trustyourinstinct is the obvious starting point on figures, bringing the standout rating of 114 and a far superior topspeed mark of 100, and his recent 176-72 line says he is holding his form well. The question is whether odds-on in a tactical five-runner race on soft ground leaves any room for manoeuvre. Iron Fist looks the one most likely to give him something to think about after a pair of solid efforts and another creditable third last time, while Tiberius Thunder is better than his recent string of defeats implies if bouncing back. It’s not a deep race, but it is the kind where pace and positioning could matter plenty.

Top Selections

1. Trustyourinstinct – 1/3 with Bet365

Jockey: Dylan Browne McMonagle | Trainer: Joseph Patrick O’Brien | Form: 176-72 | Rating: 114 | Topspeed: 100

He is hard to oppose despite the cramped price. Trustyourinstinct simply brings the best form into the race, and there is a fair gap between him and the rest on official ratings. That topspeed figure of 100 towers over these rivals and his recent sequence suggests he is running right up to his mark without getting his head in front. In a five-runner race you can see Dylan Browne McMonagle keeping things straightforward from stall 2, and Joseph O’Brien’s runner ought to have too much class if reproducing his latest effort. At 1/3 there is no romance in the price, but there is plenty of solidity in the selection. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

Betting Strategy

Keep it simple: Trustyourinstinct is the win bet and the one with the clearest claims in a race lacking depth. There is no each-way angle in a five-runner field, so don’t overcomplicate it. If you want to look beyond the favourite, Iron Fist is the likeliest danger, with Tiberius Thunder the potential spoiler if able to rediscover better form.

20:18 – Gowran Park Handicap

Race Details: 1m 1f | | Going: SOFT | | flat

This is a proper end-of-card handicap with plenty of moving parts and, in truth, it looks a trickier puzzle than the market might suggest. Java Wood, Sir Jeremy and Ballymagreehan all arrive here off wins, while Lauderdale King shaped like a horse about to strike when third last time and Doctor Grace has been knocking on the door too. Soft ground over this trip will put the emphasis on stamina and attitude rather than a simple turn of foot, and in a big field that matters. Some of the shorter-priced runners have to prove they can back up recent efforts under different circumstances, whereas a few at double-figure odds look better treated than their prices imply. It is competitive, but not impossible to solve if you side with solid recent handicap form.

Top Selections

1. Lauderdale King – 6/1 with Paddy Power

Jockey: Andrew Slattery | Trainer: Andrew Slattery | Form: 80-03 | Rating: 74 | Topspeed: 68

Lauderdale King makes plenty of appeal. He looked badly in need of the run on his return and then took a healthy step forward when third last time, which is exactly the sort of profile I want in a race like this. Off 74, with only 131 to carry, he looks fairly treated and his topspeed figure stacks up well enough against the principals. Draw 13 is no disaster in a field of this size, and Andrew Slattery knows exactly what he is sitting on. At 6/1 with Paddy Power, he looks one of the few near the head of the market who still offers a bit of value. Bet: WIN

2. Faro Island – 11/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Dylan Browne McMonagle | Trainer: A Oliver | Form: 0310-4 | Rating: 74 | Topspeed: 70

Faro Island is the each-way angle. He returned from a break with a respectable fourth and that may well have brought him on nicely for this. His rating of 74 leaves him with a definite chance in this company, and that topspeed mark of 70 says he has enough ability to get involved if the race is run to suit. The wide draw in 15 is the obvious concern, but he is not badly weighted on 134 and Dylan Browne McMonagle is the kind of rider you want in a big-field handicap when things get messy. Available at 11/1 with Bet365, he looks overpriced for a yard capable of landing one like this. Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Lauderdale King is the win play after shaping like a horse ready to strike on his second start back. Faro Island is the each-way punt at double-figure odds, with five places giving him obvious appeal in a field this deep. The main dangers are Java Wood, who is respected after winning again, and Sir Jeremy, though a 10lb rise asks a serious question.
