14:00 – Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Maiden

Race Details: 7f | | Going: YIELDING TO SOFT | | flat

This looks a deep enough fillies’ maiden for the time of year and, while there are plenty of unknowns among the newcomers, the race does have a solid shape to it. Zenith Blaze sets the standard on what we know after a promising debut second and it is no surprise she dominates the market. Alpine Wedding has the strongest body of form among those with experience, while Snowing has had three goes and could yet find more now tackling this test again. Mala also shaped well first time out and doesn’t look badly treated on her 87 rating. Even so, this feels like a race where the obvious one may simply be better than maiden company if coping with the yielding to soft ground.

Top Selections

1. Zenith Blaze – 8/13 with Bet365

Jockey: Colin Keane | Trainer: Joseph Patrick O’Brien | Form: 2 | Rating: 88 | Topspeed: 74

She is the clear form pick for me. A debut second in a race like this usually proves a very solid starting point, and an 88 rating already gives her the edge over most of these fillies who have either achieved less or shown nothing at all. Colin Keane is an eye-catching booking and Joseph O’Brien’s juveniles generally know their job after one run. The short price reflects that and 8/13 is hardly a gift, but sometimes the obvious answer is the right one. If she takes the expected step forward from that first outing, she should be very hard to oppose. Bet type: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Alpine Wedding – 5/1 with Bet365

Jockey: W J Lee | Trainer: P Twomey | Form: 535 | Rating: 93 | Topspeed: 91

For an each-way play, Alpine Wedding makes plenty of appeal because she has actually built a reliable profile. Her figures of 535 tell you she has been thereabouts in decent company, and the bare numbers are strong too: a 93 rating and 91 topspeed are serious pieces of form in a maiden. Draw 18 is not ideal in a big field over 7f here, but W J Lee riding for Paddy Twomey is a combination that commands respect and she looks the type to run her race again. At 5/1, she appeals as the sensible each-way punt against the favourite. Bet type: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Zenith Blaze is the win bet and the one they all have to beat on known form. Alpine Wedding is the each-way alternative in a race where experience should count for plenty. Snowing and Mala are the obvious dangers if either improves again, but the percentage call is to keep it simple: back the favourite to win and cover with Alpine Wedding for the places.

14:30 – Irish Stallion Farms EBF (C & G) Maiden

Race Details: 7f | | Going: YIELDING TO SOFT | | flat

This looks a useful enough maiden for early September, with proven form at the head of the market and a few expensive-looking debutants lurking underneath. Drumbeat sets the standard on what he has already shown, his 94 rating and recent placed effort making him the obvious one, but he is drawn wide in 14 and doesn’t look bombproof at short odds in an 18-runner field. The Captains Day made a very solid start when fourth and his Topspeed figure of 81 catches the eye, while Equus Victor has racecourse experience and a good low draw to work from. Joseph O’Brien’s newcomer Invincible Mind is clearly respected by the market, but this isn’t the easiest place to make a winning debut. Strong race, but not an impossible puzzle.

Top Selections

1. Drumbeat – 13/8 with Bet365

Jockey: Wayne Lordan | Trainer: A P O’Brien | Form: 63 | Rating: 94 | Topspeed: 53

Drumbeat is the percentage call because he has the best piece of form in the book and a clear edge on ratings. He improved from his debut sixth to finish third last time, and a mark of 94 in a maiden like this says plenty. Aidan O’Brien’s juveniles often take a step forward with racing and Wayne Lordan is an uncomplicated booking for one who should know his job now. The slight niggle is that 13/8 is not exactly a gift in a deep 18-runner affair on yielding to soft ground, but if he handles conditions he sets a standard the others still have to reach. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. The Captains Day – 4/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Colin Keane | Trainer: M D O’Callaghan | Form: 4 | Rating: 86 | Topspeed: 81

The Captains Day appeals as the each-way play because his debut fourth was full of promise and the figures back that up better than the bare result. An 86 rating and 81 Topspeed after just one start suggest there is plenty to work with, and Colin Keane aboard for M D O’Callaghan is never a combination to dismiss in a maiden at Gowran. He doesn’t need a massive leap to get right in the mix here, and unlike some of the shorter-priced unexposed types, we at least know he can already run to a useful level. At 4/1, he looks the sensible each-way punt against the favourite. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Drumbeat is the win bet because his form is simply the strongest on offer and he has earned favouritism. For a bit more insurance in a big field, The Captains Day makes plenty of appeal each-way given his promising debut and solid figures. The main danger is Invincible Mind if the market has him right first time, while Equus Victor is another with enough experience to get involved.

15:00 – Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden

Race Details: 7f | | Going: YIELDING TO SOFT | | flat

This looks a fairly interesting maiden rather than a penalty kick, even if the market has latched firmly onto Starborn Legend. Joseph O’Brien’s colt brings the standout rating of 88 and his 624 form reads well enough in this company, so he is the obvious one. That said, this is a big field on yielding to soft ground and maidens like this can get messy. Hasita has been knocking on the door in similar races, Tourin shaped with plenty of promise when third on debut, and Holy Lettuce has the experience to give another honest account. There are also a few unexposed types such as Marked By Thunder and Enigma Code who could step forward, so it is not completely straightforward despite the short-priced favourite.

Top Selections

1. Starborn Legend – 1/1 with Betfair

Jockey: J M Sheridan | Trainer: Joseph Patrick O’Brien | Form: 624 | Rating: 88 | Topspeed: 66

He sets the standard and, in truth, he does not need to improve much to win a maiden of this nature. The 624 profile suggests he has been learning on the job, and that mark of 88 is comfortably the best on offer here. Draw 4 is no bad place to be in a field of this size, and Joseph O’Brien’s runners in these middle-distance and seven-furlong maidens are rarely short of condition. At even money he is no giveaway, but he is hard to oppose on what has been shown already and looks the one most likely to get the job done if handling these conditions. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Tourin – 9/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Gavin Ryan | Trainer: J A Stack | Form: 3 | Rating: 75 | Topspeed: 69

If you want something at a backable price against the favourite, Tourin makes plenty of appeal. A debut third in a maiden like this is often the right starting point for a Stack filly, and the Topspeed figure of 69 says that effort had substance. She receives weight from the colts, has enough tactical pace for seven furlongs, and should know more about the job now. In a 17-runner field, 9/2 is not massive each-way value in the traditional sense, but she looks the one most likely to chase the favourite home and has the upside to do better than that. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Starborn Legend is the solid win play because he brings the clearest piece of form and the best rating. For an each-way punt, Tourin is the sensible alternative after a promising debut and should be involved if building on that. Hasita and Holy Lettuce are the obvious dangers if the favourite underperforms, while Marked By Thunder is the interesting dark one among the lesser-exposed runners.

15:30 – 1xBet.ie Proud Supporters Of Irish Racing Handicap

Race Details: 7f | | Going: YIELDING TO SOFT | | flat

This looks a proper three-year-old handicap rather than a weak numbers race, and there are several with believable cases. Lohoobb arrives here off a win and has the recent form edge, while Motta Alta is lightly raced and open to better after just three starts. Cladach is the interesting lurker at the bottom of the weights, dropping into handicap company off a mark of 73 for a yard that knows the time of day with this type. Ninth Crusade has the strongest Topspeed figure in the field and can’t be dismissed if bouncing back, while Nazario and Venetian Star are capable of getting involved from handy draws. It’s competitive, no question, but not impossible to solve if you side with the improvers rather than the fully exposed types.

Top Selections

1. Cladach – 4/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Declan McDonogh | Trainer: Joseph Patrick O’Brien | Form: 4908 | Rating: 73 | Topspeed: 68

He’s easy to mark up now handicapping for the first time. Cladach hasn’t achieved much on bare form in four runs, but that opening mark of 73 could easily underestimate him and this is exactly the sort of profile Joseph O’Brien often improves once the handicapper gets involved. The 7f on yielding to soft ground should suit better than a sharper test, and Declan McDonogh is a notable booking to help him settle and travel. At 4/1 he’s no hidden secret, but the price still makes sense for a horse with more upside than most of these. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Venetian Star – 12/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Luke McAteer | Trainer: Patrick T Foley | Form: 330200 | Rating: 82 | Topspeed: 79

Venetian Star is the each-way angle at a double-figure price. The recent form figures don’t exactly leap off the page, but that Topspeed mark of 79 is the best in the field and tells you the ability is there if things fall right. Stall 1 is no bad place to be over this trip, and if Luke McAteer can get him into a rhythm early he has enough class to outrun 12/1. He’s not one for maximum faith after that latest duck, granted, but in a 12-runner handicap with four places on offer he makes plenty more appeal as a value play than some of the shorter ones. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Cladach is the main play and the win bet, because he’s the one open to the most improvement now entering handicaps from a workable mark. Venetian Star is the each-way punt at 12/1, with his Topspeed figure making him too interesting to ignore at the prices. The obvious dangers are Lohoobb, who comes here in winning form, and Motta Alta, a progressive filly with a solid profile.

16:00 – Membership At Gowran Park Fillies & Mares Claiming Race

Race Details: 1m | | Going: YIELDING TO SOFT | | flat

This looks a competitive little claiming race rather than a deep one, with a few arriving in solid nick and several others needing a leap of faith. Profit Surge sets the standard on recent consistency after finally getting her head back in front, while Minaun View is another who brings proper current form and a smart Topspeed figure into the argument. The 3yo fillies Tax Me Later, Star Of Beauty and Quinta Girl all have enough ability to get involved, especially with age allowances helping their cause, but they do not look bombproof. Yielding to soft ground over a mile at Gowran can expose anything not quite seeing things out, so recent toughness and race fitness could count for plenty. It is a trappy enough contest, but not an impossible one to solve.

Top Selections

1. Profit Surge – 3/1 with Betfair

Jockey: Colin Keane | Trainer: Ian Patrick Donoghue | Form: 322331 | Rating: 86 | Topspeed: 59

She is the percentage call. Profit Surge has been knocking loudly for a while and got her reward last time, and that sequence of 322331 tells its own story in a race where plenty have questions to answer. A mark of 86 is the best in the field and she is attractively weighted for a claimer, while stall 1 should help if Keane wants to hold a handy position. She is not flashy, but she is dependable, battle-hardened and clearly thriving. At 3/1 she is hardly a hidden gem, yet in this company she still makes plenty of appeal as the one most likely to run her race. Bet: WIN

2. Minaun View – 4/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Patrick McGettigan | Trainer: Adrian McGuinness | Form: 112715 | Rating: 84 | Topspeed: 75

Minaun View looks the value alternative and makes plenty of each-way sense. That recent profile is better than it might first appear, with two wins in the book and a latest fifth that does not put me off in the slightest. The standout figure here is her Topspeed of 75, comfortably the best on offer, and that hints she has the raw pace to cope if this turns tactical before quickening late. From a wider draw she may need things to drop right, but she is well enough treated at the weights and has been holding her form admirably. Available at 4/1, she is a very fair each-way punt. Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Profit Surge is the solid win play given her current consistency, proven attitude and the booking of Colin Keane. Minaun View is the each-way option in a 9-runner field with three places on offer, as her recent form and big Topspeed figure make her dangerous if getting the right trip. The main dangers are Tax Me Later after a promising debut and Star Of Beauty, who is exposed but capable of hitting the frame again.

16:30 – Societies Welcome At Gowran Park Apprentice Handicap

Race Details: 1m | | Going: YIELDING TO SOFT | | flat

This is a proper apprentice handicap in the Irish mould: big field, plenty with bits and pieces of form, and not many you could call bombproof. Navajo Point arrives on the back of a solid second and is rightly near the head of the market, while Medieval Night and Selective Power have also been knocking on the door. Lady Kelly is interesting as a lightly raced 3yo against older horses, and Roderick has the profile of one who can sneak into the frame again from a workable mark. The ground should put the emphasis on toughness at a mile, and in a race like this position and a clean run will matter as much as raw ability. Tricky, yes, but not impossible to solve.

Top Selections

1. Navajo Point – 5/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Paddy Harnett | Trainer: Martin Hassett | Form: 60-842 | Rating: 60 | Topspeed: 42

Navajo Point makes plenty of appeal in a race where a lot of these are either exposed or unreliable. That recent second suggests he is coming to the boil at the right time, and stall 2 is a handy place to be if he breaks on terms and gets a decent stalking position. He is not thrown in on the figures, but neither does he need to improve much to win an ordinary contest of this nature from a mark of 60. Paddy Harnett takes over for a yard that can place one well enough, and at 5/1 he looks the percentage call rather than a flashy one. Bet: WIN

2. Roderick – 11/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Jack Cleary | Trainer: P Sweeney | Form: 7-7042 | Rating: 66 | Topspeed: 58

Roderick is a 10-year-old, so nobody is pretending there is hidden upside here, but he ran a very fair race when second last time and his topspeed figure of 58 is one of the better numbers on offer in this field. He is the sort who needs things to fall right, yet in a 19-runner handicap that is exactly why double-figure odds can be attractive. Jack Cleary takes off and if he can slot in from draw 14 rather than get trapped wide, Roderick has every chance of keeping on into the places and possibly better. At 11/1, he makes plenty of each-way sense. Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Navajo Point is the straightforward win play after that latest second and from a good low draw. Roderick is the each-way punt at 11/1 in a race paying five places, with his recent runner-up effort giving him solid frame credentials. The obvious dangers are Medieval Night, who has been edging back into form, and Lady Kelly, who could be the one with a bit more scope than most of these.

17:00 – Support The Irish Injured Jockeys Fund Handicap

Race Details: 1m | | Going: YIELDING TO SOFT | | flat

This is a proper Gowran handicap puzzle with 19 runners, plenty arriving with bits and pieces of form, and not many you could call bombproof. Mr Perth heads the market off just 69 after only four starts, so he is the obvious “could be ahead of the assessor” angle, while Suir Monad also brings the unexposed 3yo profile into a race where that often matters. Cosmic Funk has been knocking on the door in similar company and looks sure to run his race again, while Majestic King and She’s Ideal bring more established handicap form to the table. Faoladh comes here off a win but has top weight to defy now. It looks a tricky rather than a strong contest, and in a field this deep I’d rather side with horses who still have some upside than the fully exposed types.

Top Selections

1. Suir Monad – 15/2 with Bet365

Jockey: | Trainer: Andrew Slattery | Form: 4-43 | Rating: 74 | Topspeed: 45

Suir Monad is the one that makes most appeal because he comes into this as a lightly raced 3yo who has done very little wrong in three starts. The recent third suggests he is learning on the job and this opening mark of 74 does not look overly harsh in a race where plenty of rivals have shown their hand already. Drawn in 4, he should be able to get a sensible position, and the yard has a few darts to throw here, which often tells you they expect to be competitive. At 15/2 with Bet365, he looks the percentage call in a race full of ifs and buts. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Cosmic Funk – 6/1 with Betfair

Jockey: Luke McAteer | Trainer: P J F Murphy | Form: 727556 | Rating: 73 | Topspeed: 56

Cosmic Funk is not hiding much from the handicapper, but he is also the sort you can trust to give you a run for your money in a race of this nature. He has been mixing it in competitive handicaps, his mark of 73 is workable, and stall 2 could be a real help if he can hold a handy position on this ground. You would like a little more finishing punch, but the consistency is there and this does not look a contest stacked with solid win machines. With five places on offer, 6/1 each-way is perfectly fair for a horse who has enough form to be right in the argument again. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Suir Monad is the win play on the basis that he is one of the few open to proper progress and could easily prove better than 74. Cosmic Funk is the safer each-way punt given his solid handicap profile and handy draw. The main dangers look to be Mr Perth if the market has it right, and Majestic King, who is well treated enough if building on that latest fourth.

17:32 – Racing Again September 19th Maiden

Race Details: 1m 6f | | Going: YIELDING TO SOFT | | flat

This is a slightly odd maiden, packed with exposed types and older runners, so it may not take a world-beater to win it. The obvious starting points are Bartholomew, Joe Cool and Western Fold, all of whom bring the most solid recent profiles, while Thisistheway is the interesting class angle on figures despite failing to fire last time. Path d’Oroux also shaped with promise when third on debut and could easily step forward for a yard that knows the time of day. Over this stiff 1m6f on yielding to soft ground, proven stamina and a willingness to battle should count for plenty. It looks more a test of resolution than brilliance, and that makes it a tricky enough puzzle despite the presence of a few familiar names near the head of the market.

Top Selections

1. Joe Cool – 6/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Colin Keane | Trainer: Noel Meade | Form: 30-224 | Rating: 85 | Topspeed: 60

Joe Cool appeals as the percentage call in a race where plenty have had chances without getting the job done. His recent sequence of placed efforts says he is knocking firmly on the door, and an 85 rating puts him right in the mix in this company. He has been shaping like this sort of trip should suit, and having Colin Keane booked is hardly a negative when you want one delivered late and efficiently in a big field. At 6/1 he looks a fair win play because he arrives with the most dependable current profile and doesn’t need to improve dramatically to take this. Bet: WIN

2. Path d’Oroux

Jockey: Gary Carroll | Trainer: Gavin Cromwell | Form: 3 | Rating: 79 | Topspeed: 35

Path d’Oroux is the one who makes each-way appeal if you want something less exposed than several of these. A debut third in a race like this is often a good foundation stone, especially in a field full of runners who have shown their hand already. Gavin Cromwell is more than capable of bringing one forward from that initial experience, and this extra yardage could draw out improvement if stamina is the horse’s game. There is no quoted best price here, but he still looks the sensible each-way alternative on profile because there should be more to come and a repeat of that debut effort puts him in the frame. Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Joe Cool is the main bet because his recent form is the most convincing and this looks a very winnable maiden for him. Path d’Oroux is the each-way play in a 17-runner field, with his unexposed profile making him attractive for place purposes. Bartholomew and Western Fold are obvious dangers, while Thisistheway is the awkward one to leave out entirely.
