17:10 – Golf At Gowran Park Optional Claiming Race
Race Details: 7f | | Going: GOOD TO YIELDING | | flat
This is a slightly quirky optional claimer rather than a deep contest, but it still looks competitive enough with a few exposed, reliable yardsticks taking on some lesser-weighted rivals. Denis Hogan looks to hold a strong hand with Independent Expert and Venetian, while Adrian McGuinness also doubles up with Clonmacash and Gloriously Glam. The market is likely to focus on Independent Expert, and that is no surprise given his clear topspeed edge, but he is not bombproof and this is the sort of race where weights and race position can make a real difference. The three-year-old Salacious gets in light and is interesting, while Profit Surge is better than his mark suggests. Tricky enough, but not impossible to solve.
Top Selections
1. Independent Expert – 11/4 with Bet365
Jockey: J M Sheridan | Trainer: Denis Gerard Hogan | Form: 88-168 | Rating: 86 | Topspeed: 77
He looks the percentage call. That rating of 86 is the best in the field and his topspeed figure of 77 stands out even more in this company. The recent form does include a below-par eighth, but he had won earlier in the campaign and this is a much more realistic assignment than some of the races he has been contesting. Hogan does well with these experienced handicapping types and J M Sheridan is a rider you want on your side in a tactical 7f race. At 11/4, he is hardly a secret, but he still makes plenty of appeal if reproducing his better spring form. Bet: WIN
Bet: WIN
2. Salacious – 7/1 with Paddy Power
Jockey: Andrew Slattery | Trainer: Josh Halley | Form: 88-240 | Rating: 78 | Topspeed: 57
The obvious each-way angle is the lightly weighted three-year-old. He gets in here with just 123 and that alone makes him interesting against older, more exposed opposition in a race lacking much depth. His form is a bit uneven, but the second and fourth earlier in the season read perfectly well in this context, and I am inclined to forgive the latest zero rather than define him by it. Andrew Slattery is a positive booking and if this turns into a race where those carrying lumps start to feel it late on, Salacious could easily be the one picking up the pieces. At 7/1, he looks a solid each-way punt.
Bet: EACH-WAY
Betting Strategy
Independent Expert is the win play because he has the best figures and the strongest piece of recent winning form on offer. For an each-way alternative, Salacious makes plenty of sense off a handy weight in a 10-runner race with three places on offer. The main danger is Venetian, who has the right connections and enough consistency to be involved again.

17:45 – Gowran Park Median Auction Fillies Maiden
Race Details: 1m | | Going: GOOD TO YIELDING | | flat
This looks a pretty informative little maiden rather than a deep one, and the market has latched on to the obvious form. Fleur De Provence sets the standard after a promising debut second and, for all she’s drawn widest, she’s the one they all have to beat if taking the normal step forward for Dermot Weld. Sanctijude brings the most solid body of form into the race and has been knocking on the door without quite getting the job done, while Bofa Beach has useful juvenile form and is interesting back from a break. There are also a couple of unexposed Joseph O’Brien runners, notably Nellcote, who could easily have a say first time out. Still, the likely winner should come from the proven trio unless one of the newcomers is above average.
Top Selections
1. Fleur De Provence – 1/1 with Bet365
Jockey: Chris Hayes | Trainer: D K Weld | Form: 2 | Rating: 93 | Topspeed: 56
She’s the percentage call. A debut second is often the best piece of form in these fillies’ maidens and Fleur De Provence already has the highest rating in the field after just one start. Weld runners are seldom fully wound up first time, so there’s every chance there was more to come than she showed on debut, and Chris Hayes is exactly the man you want delivering that improvement. The draw in 9 is not ideal over a mile here, but class can smooth that over, especially in a race lacking depth. At even-money she isn’t a hidden gem, but she’s hard to oppose on what we know. Bet type: WIN.
Bet: WIN
2. Nellcote – 11/2 with Bet365
Jockey: Dylan Browne McMonagle | Trainer: Joseph Patrick O’Brien | Form: | Rating: | Topspeed:
For an each-way angle, Nellcote makes plenty of appeal in a race where the obvious ones may dominate the betting. Joseph O’Brien is double-handed, but Dylan Browne McMonagle siding with this newcomer catches the eye and stall 2 should allow her to get a handy, uncomplicated trip. In a nine-runner maiden, you don’t need a miracle to hit the frame if you’ve any ability at all, and this filly is priced as though she has a realistic chance of being useful. With Sanctijude looking exposed enough and Bofa Beach returning from time off, 11/2 is fair for a stable capable of readying one first time. Bet type: EACH-WAY.
Bet: EACH-WAY
Betting Strategy
Keep it straightforward: Fleur De Provence is the win play because she has the best piece of form and the most obvious scope to improve. For a bit of value, Nellcote is the each-way punt at 11/2 in a race where not many beyond the front of the market make serious appeal. Sanctijude is the main danger if reproducing her solid level again, while Bofa Beach is respected.

18:20 – INPBA Sponsored Gate June 1st Maiden
Race Details: 1m | | Going: GOOD TO YIELDING | | flat
This looks a fair maiden rather than a deep one, and the market has understandably latched on to the three obvious 3yos with solid recent form. Chamonix, Big Cypress and Rolltight bring the strongest figures into the race, with the first named narrowly setting the standard on experience and consistency. Rolltight shaped particularly well when second on his return and looks the type to improve again for J P Murtagh, while Big Cypress also took a useful step forward on his second start. Hassaniya is the other one with a realistic chance if building on her latest fourth under Colin Keane. The older horses have the benefit of maturity, but Loughrea is the only one of them with form that gives him any serious place squeak. Tricky enough if one of the newcomers is useful, but the principals are pretty clear.
Top Selections
1. Chamonix – 9/4 with Bet365
Jockey: Dylan Browne McMonagle | Trainer: Joseph Patrick O’Brien | Form: 54 | Rating: 77 | Topspeed: 27
Chamonix is the one I want on side. Joseph O’Brien runs two, but this colt looks the stable first string on jockey bookings and his profile makes plenty of appeal in a maiden of this sort. He has improved from fifth to fourth in two starts and, crucially, already owns one of the better ratings in the field. There should be more to come now stepping into this 1m on good to yielding ground, and he doesn’t need to find a huge amount to take this. At 9/4 with Bet365, he is no giveaway, but he still makes most appeal as the likeliest winner.
Bet: WIN
2. Loughrea – 10/1 with Paddy Power
Jockey: Andrew Slattery | Trainer: Andrew Slattery | Form: 5- | Rating: 68 | Topspeed: 60
If you want something at a price against the obvious 3yo trio, Loughrea is the each-way play. He is a 4yo, so there’s no sexy unexposed angle, but his sole run when fifth produced a perfectly respectable rating of 68 and a topspeed figure of 60, which stacks up well enough outside the front rank. Andrew Slattery knows exactly what he has here and rides himself, which catches the eye. He’ll need to improve to beat the market leaders, but in a 15-runner maiden with three places on offer, 10/1 with Paddy Power looks fair for a horse who should be competitive if returning in similar nick.
Bet: EACH-WAY
Betting Strategy
Chamonix is the straight win bet, as he brings the strongest blend of experience, rating and likely improvement. For an each-way punt, Loughrea makes more appeal than the shorter-priced alternatives because he has solid enough numbers and a workable price in a big field. Rolltight and Big Cypress are the obvious dangers, with Hassaniya next on the shortlist.

18:50 – Membership At Gowran Park Golf Club Handicap
Race Details: 1m | | Going: GOOD TO YIELDING | | flat
This is a proper Gowran handicap puzzle rather than a race packed with certainty, and the market has understandably clustered around a handful with something to recommend them. Alto Sax arrives off a recent win and is clearly on the shortlist despite a rise, while Mythical Rock and Staywitherjohnny bring solid enough recent form to the table in a race where plenty are either out of form or hard to trust. Chipsrdown is respected but short enough for one with patchy recent efforts, and the likes of Master Garvey and Just Another Eagle are the sort who could outrun their prices if returning tuned up. Over a mile on good to yielding ground, a handy draw, recent sharpness and the ability to travel strongly through the race should count for plenty. It looks competitive, but not especially deep.
Top Selections
1. Staywitherjohnny – 9/2 with Bet365
Jockey: Dylan Browne McMonagle | Trainer: Ciaran Murphy | Form: 709-63 | Rating: 66 | Topspeed: 54
Staywitherjohnny makes plenty of appeal in a race where a few of the obvious ones are already fully exposed. He shaped with encouragement on his return and then built on that with a placed effort last time, which suggests he is coming to the boil at exactly the right moment. A mark of 66 is workable in this company, and that Topspeed figure of 54 says he has the pace to cope if this turns tactical or steadily-run before quickening. Dylan Browne McMonagle is the sort of rider you want in a messy 18-runner handicap, and 9/2 looks fair rather than cramped. He holds strong claims if getting a smooth passage. Bet: WIN
Bet: WIN
2. Master Garvey – 17/2 with Bet365
Jockey: Declan McDonogh | Trainer: Joseph Anthony Murray | Form: -45387 | Rating: 62 | Topspeed: 36
Master Garvey is not bombproof, but this is the sort of race where an each-way play should be about price as much as profile, and 17/2 is tempting. His recent form figures do not scream winner, yet there have been enough competitive efforts in that sequence to suggest he can be involved from this sort of mark. He is down on 62, carries just 122, and the booking of Declan McDonogh catches the eye in a race where experience and positioning matter. He does not have the flashiest speed figure in the field, but plenty of these are either badly drawn, badly out of form or too short. He looks the value each-way against more fashionable rivals. Bet: EACH-WAY
Bet: EACH-WAY
Betting Strategy
Staywitherjohnny is the straight win play, as he looks to be arriving here in the right nick and still has a bit of upside in this grade. Master Garvey is the each-way alternative at a backable price with five places on offer. Alto Sax is the obvious danger after his recent win, while Mythical Rock is another who would not surprise if bouncing back.

19:20 – @gowranpark1 On X Fillies Race
Race Details: 1m 1f | | Going: GOOD TO YIELDING | | flat
This may only be a four-runner affair, but it is an interesting little tactical contest rather than a straightforward penalty kick. Lady Mairen brings the strongest established level on ratings after returning to score, while Sparan Nua immediately adds intrigue as a 3yo who won on debut and is already rated 97. That makes her a very serious rival getting plenty of weight from the older fillies. Vauntingly also represents a top yard and could step forward from her initial third, though she has a bit to find on what we know so far. Marmeladova got her head back in front last time but needs another chunk of improvement. In a race lacking depth, class and tactical speed are likely to decide it, and the market principals do look to have this between them.
Top Selections
1. Sparan Nua – 2/1 with Betfair
Jockey: Declan McDonogh | Trainer: J S Bolger | Form: 1 | Rating: 97 | Topspeed: 54
I am prepared to side with the unexposed filly rather than the proven older mare. Sparan Nua could hardly have done more than win first time up, and the fact she has been handed a mark of 97 straight away tells you that debut was not missed by the assessor. She gets in here with just 129lb as a 3yo against older fillies, and that weight concession could be crucial over this trip if the race turns tactical. Bolger’s youngsters often know their job and Declan McDonogh is a positive booking for a race where position will matter. At 2/1, she looks the value against a short enough favourite.
Bet: WIN
Betting Strategy
With only four runners, this is a straight win-bet race and Sparan Nua gets the vote. The combination of debut promise, a lofty opening mark and a handy weight pull makes her the percentage call at around 2/1. Lady Mairen is the obvious danger on established form and is hard to dismiss, while Vauntingly is the one who could outrun her price if improving sharply from debut.

19:50 – Family Fun Day June 1st Handicap
Race Details: 1m 5f | | Going: GOOD TO YIELDING | | flat
This is the sort of staying handicap that can make fools of plenty, with 17 declared and no shortage of runners arriving with something to prove. Celtic Druid has done his winning at a lower level but is clearly thriving, while Earthsong looks the solid, obvious one after a couple of respectable efforts in better company. Makaiah is interesting after a strong return to action and has the sort of profile that suggests this trip can bring more out of him, whereas Quiz Test has the figures to be involved if bouncing back from a tame reappearance. There are plenty of exposed types in here and a few badly drawn ones too, so this feels more tricky puzzle than deep race. In a contest likely decided by who settles and sees it out best, I want something still on the upgrade.
Top Selections
1. Makaiah – 8/1 with Betfair
Jockey: J M Sheridan | Trainer: Gerard O’Leary | Form: 6640-2 | Rating: 75 | Topspeed: 73
Makaiah makes plenty of appeal in a race where a lot of these look fully exposed. He returned from a break with a runner-up effort that was easily his most encouraging piece of recent work, and that Topspeed figure of 73 is the best in the field, which immediately catches the eye in a handicap like this. Off 75, he is not obviously thrown in, but he does look poised to run a big race if building on that comeback. J M Sheridan is a positive booking and, at 8/1, he looks the one with a bit of juice in the price compared to some shorter rivals who have less scope. Bet: WIN
2. Earthsong – 4/1 with Bet365
Jockey: W J Lee | Trainer: W McCreery | Form: 739-45 | Rating: 71 | Topspeed: 22
Earthsong is hardly hiding from the assessor and the market has him figured out, but there is a lot to like about his consistency. He shaped well enough on both starts this term, and this mark of 71 gives him every chance if he sees out the 1m5f strongly. W J Lee riding for Willie McCreery always commands respect around here, and this looks a more realistic opening than some of the races he has been contesting. At 4/1 he is not exactly a gift, but in a race full of doubts he is one of the more trustworthy options to hit the frame and possibly go very close if getting a smooth trip. Bet: EACH-WAY
Betting Strategy
Makaiah is the win play at a fair enough 8/1, chiefly because his comeback second hinted that a staying handicap like this is ready to fall his way. Earthsong is the each-way alternative for those wanting the safer angle, as he brings a dependable profile into a race full of flaky types. The obvious danger is Celtic Druid, who is in form and clearly well enough treated to matter again.

20:20 – Ladies Day July 25th Handicap
Race Details: 2m | | Going: GOOD TO YIELDING | | flat
This is a proper staying handicap and, for all there are 15 declared, it does not look especially deep. The market has understandably latched on to Jurality, who has been knocking on the door in similar company, while Desert Friend arrives in rude health after winning last time and is another with obvious claims. Mephisto is interesting off a reduced racing weight and should strip fitter for his recent return, but stall 15 is no gift over this trip. There are one or two lurkers at bigger prices, notably Bynx, though plenty of these bring patchy or stale form. In truth, this looks less a strong race than a tricky one where resolution and race position over the final half-mile will count for plenty.
Top Selections
1. Jurality – 11/4 with Bet365
Jockey: Dylan Browne McMonagle | Trainer: Paul W Flynn | Form: 2-5553 | Rating: 69 | Topspeed: 59
Jurality is the solid one in a race where that counts for a lot. She is running off the joint-highest mark in the field, but there is nothing wrong with the way she has been holding her form and that latest third suggested this sort of contest is well within reach. A Topspeed of 59 is among the better numbers on offer here and, unlike some of these, she is at least arriving with her engine running. The wide draw is not ideal, yet over 2m there is time for Dylan Browne McMonagle to get organised. At 11/4 she is no giveaway, but she is still the one with the clearest overall profile.
Bet: WIN
2. Bynx – 10/1 with Bet365
Jockey: Paddy Harnett | Trainer: Martin Hassett | Form: 3330-6 | Rating: 61 | Topspeed: 52
Bynx appeals as the each-way play because his price gives you room to manoeuvre and his profile is not nearly as ragged as some in here. He was consistent enough before the winter, and while his comeback sixth does not leap off the page, it was at least a run that should have brought him on. Drawn in stall 2, he ought to get a sensible trip, which matters in a race full of doubtful stayers and unreliable characters. He is 8lb lower in the weights than Desert Friend and does not need to improve much to hit the frame. At 10/1, he looks the value each-way punt in a race where plenty can go wrong for the principals.
Bet: EACH-WAY
Betting Strategy
Keep it straightforward: Jurality is the win bet because she brings the most dependable recent form and sets the standard on the figures. Bynx is the each-way alternative at a double-figure price, with his low draw and workable mark making him interesting for the places. Desert Friend is the obvious danger after that latest win, while Mephisto is respected if overcoming a wide berth.
