There’s a bumper Bank Holiday Monday of horse racing in the UK, with the Irish Grand National the feature race of the day at 5pm. Andrew Mount has a quartet of best bets on Monday 6 April, with his best bets running at Hereford, Plumpton, Kempton & Fairyhouse.
Grosvenor have a fabulous welcome offer for horse racing punters as they are offering Double The Odds to a maximum £10 stake.
Hereford Racing Tips (Monday 6 April 2026)
Seven races take place over the sticks at Hereford, with Andrew heading to the opening race at 1.35pm for his best bet.
1.35 Hereford – Granite Sands (0.5pt e/w – 16/1 bet365)
I was kicking myself for not making 22-1 Huntingdon winner Pergamon a bet on Saturday as he had caught the eye at Southwell’s November 14th meeting on his latest outing where he raced in the ‘swamp’ on the inside rail. A host of runners who took the inside route that day have won since, including La Vish. Sarah Hollinshead’s five-year-old finished a 300-1 eighth to Vango Can Go in a soft-ground 2m bumper that day but was massively inconvenienced by racing on the slowest ground and followed that effort with a pair of third places (150-1 and 50-1) before his 20-1 Warwick success in a three-runner novices’ hurdle (I was saving him up until his handicap debut – another one that got away). Granite Sands was just a head behind La Vish at Southwell when also taking the ‘swamp’ route, starting at just 7-1 having shown plenty of promise when a 12-1 fourth of 12 in a good-ground Doncaster bumper on his debut last March. The Southwell run was much better than it looks and he’s worth chancing now returned to a faster surface.
Plumpton Racing Tips (Monday 6 April 2026)
Another seven races take place at Plumpton, with Andrew opting for a double-figured price contender in the 2.00pm event.
2.00 Plumpton – The Wise Traveller (1pt win – 12/1 bet365)
Sarah Humphrey is a shrewd trainer whose runners often go under the radar. Simply backing the yard’s handicappers on turf, Flat or jumps, since the beginning of 2021, would have found 44 winners from 249 bets (17.7% strike-rate) for a profit of £180.39 to a £1 level stake at SP (+£258.35 at Betfair SP after 2% commission). This angle started the season well (+£21.00 in September/October) and the November-March difficult spell (one winner from 37 bets, -£32.50) was ended with 100-30 shot Park Annonciade scoring at Huntingdon on Saturday. Now could be the time to get with the yard and veteran Wise Traveller, 3lb lower than when making all over course and distance in September, has been freshened up since his Catterick defeat on New Year’s Day and was a winner at Huntingdon in the corresponding week last year.
Kempton Racing Tips (Monday 6 April 2026)
A bumper eight-race meeting comes from Kempton Park on the all-weather. Andrew has an eye-catching 7/2 pick in the 3.30pm.
3.30 Kempton – Topteam (2pt win – 7/2 bet365, 100/30 William Hill, Paddy Power)
Andrew Balding’s Topteam, the mount of Oisin Murphy, has yet to win on the all-weather but his two such runs – a 22-1 seventh of nine and an 80-1 ninth of 14 – came over 1m in novice/maiden company and he’s improved on turf subsequently since stepped up in trip in handicaps. His record over 1m2f or further reads 11147 (3-5), improving to 111 (3-3) away from Ascot where his front-running style is unhelpful. More significantly, he’s has been gelded since his last-of-seven Ascot run on September 6th and King Power-owned horses are 13 from 34 on the all-weather on their first start since a gelding operation (+£21.51 to a £1 level stake at SP). Andrew Balding’s runners on this angle have recorded form figures of 131312181 (5-9) for a profit of £16.73 while SP favourites, regardless of who trained them, had form figures of 1111113111 (9-10) for a profit of £18.26.
Fairyhouse Racing Tips (Monday 6 April 2026)
It’s Irish Grand National day at Fairyhouse, with the main event at 5pm. Andrew has found a big-race selection in what should be a competitive event.
5.00 Fairyhouse – Kiss Will (1pt win – 17/2 William Hill, 8/1 Unibet)
Kiss Will needs to prove his stamina for the 3m5f Irish Grand National Trip but I can’t let him go unbacked after his fine best-of-the-closers fifth to Meetmebythesea in the Jack Richards’ Novices’ Handicap Chase at the Cheltenham festival. He was seven lengths clear of the next hold-up horse to finish, and he won at Perth last April on his only previous try over 3m or further.
