16:43 – Limerick Optional Claiming Race

Race Details: 1m 3f | | Going: GOOD TO YIELDING | | flat

This looks a slightly messy optional claimer on paper, but there is a fair bit of substance around the top of the market. Tyson Fury brings the standout rating and is easy enough to see as the one they all have to beat, though he is short enough in a 12-runner race where a few lurk on workable terms. Wolfpack is an obvious danger on both rating and topspeed, while Merlin The Wizard has been running well enough in stronger company to make his presence felt from a handy draw. Kakori is interesting for Joseph O’Brien if the step up in trip helps, but he has a bit to prove on recent evidence. It is not a deep race overall, yet it is not quite the penalty kick the favourite’s price suggests either.

Top Selections

1. Tyson Fury – 1/1 with Bet365

Jockey: J M Sheridan | Trainer: Denis Gerard Hogan | Form: 3-4610 | Rating: 94 | Topspeed: 33

Tyson Fury is the clear class act on official figures and that matters plenty in a race like this. His rating of 94 puts him miles clear of most of these, and although he was only tenth last time, that came after a win and he has been competing in much hotter races than this. Denis Hogan knows how to place one in this sort of company, and dropping into an optional claimer gives him a major chance to bounce back immediately. At even money he is no giveaway, especially in a biggish field, but he is still the most likely winner by some margin if reproducing anything close to his better recent form. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Merlin The Wizard – 5/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Colin Keane | Trainer: R P Cody | Form: -02538 | Rating: 75 | Topspeed: 61

Merlin The Wizard makes plenty of each-way appeal at around 5/1, particularly with Colin Keane taking over and stall 1 a help if he can hold a good position. His recent form does not scream winner, but it is solid enough in the context of this race and his topspeed figure of 61 is a useful pointer that he still retains ability. He is not burdened with the sort of weight Tyson Fury has to carry and looks the type who can grind his way into the frame over this trip. In a race where several have questions to answer, he appeals as the dependable each-way punt who should be thereabouts if running to his mark. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Tyson Fury is the win play because he is simply the best horse in the race on the figures and class drop. For an each-way angle, Merlin The Wizard looks the sensible alternative with Keane booked and a solid profile for this level. Wolfpack is the obvious danger if building on his recent return, while Kakori is the slightly riskier improver in the line-up.

17:13 – Conference & Banqueting Facilities @ Limerick Handicap

Race Details: 1m 3f | | Going: GOOD TO YIELDING | | flat

This is a big, messy 3yo handicap and it looks exactly the sort where the market may not have everything right. Lord Aus is the obvious starting point after a solid third and he’s been installed favourite for good reason, while Kirkland Sioux and Amethyst Stone are shorter than their bare form might usually justify, suggesting connections expect better now handicapping over this longer trip. Femme Beauty arrives here in decent nick and at least brings a recent win to the table, while Delusional and Servare have bits of form that make them interesting in a race lacking many solid profiles. With 19 runners and plenty trying 1m3f in a handicap for the first time, it feels more tricky puzzle than strong contest, and a bit of patience in running could decide plenty.

Top Selections

1. Lord Aus – 3/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Ben Coen | Trainer: J P Murtagh | Form: 8053 | Rating: 70 | Topspeed: 67

He makes the most appeal among those with proven handicap promise. That latest third suggested he is starting to understand the job, and in a race full of guesswork there is plenty to be said for a colt who has at least shown he can be competitive off this sort of mark. A rating of 70 looks workable, the 1m3f trip should suit on pedigree and profile, and Ben Coen is a good booking for a horse who may just need delivering late. At 3/1 he is hardly a giveaway, but he sets the standard on what we know and is the one they all have to beat. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Delusional – 12/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Scott McCullagh | Trainer: Daniel McLoughlin | Form: 28-773 | Rating: 71 | Topspeed: 68

He looks the each-way value in a race where several of the shorter ones are running on reputation more than achievement. Delusional has been edging back towards something useful, and that recent third was a fair step in the right direction after a couple of quieter efforts. His topspeed figure of 68 is right up there with the better numbers in this field, and he doesn’t look badly treated off 71 if this extra yardage draws out a little more improvement. Scott McCullagh knows how to nurse one into a rhythm in these rough handicaps, and 12/1 feels a workable price for a horse with five places on offer. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Lord Aus is the percentage call for the win bet, as he brings the cleanest recent form and looks sure to stay. For a bit more value, Delusional makes plenty of each-way appeal at double-figure odds in a 19-runner race with five places. The obvious dangers are Femme Beauty, who arrives in form, and Amethyst Stone, who could easily improve now stepping into this sort of handicap.

17:50 – Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden

Race Details: 1m | | Going: GOOD TO YIELDING | | flat

This doesn’t look the deepest maiden run at Limerick this year and, on what we’ve seen, Res Ipsa sets a clear standard. His runner-up effort on his return is comfortably the best recent piece of form in the field and an 86 rating leaves the rest with plenty to find. The market reflects that, of course, so the real puzzle is whether there’s any value lurking underneath him. I Carry You Home has only been seen once and is entitled to step forward, while newcomers Camino Lad and Shorten The Winter come from yards capable of readying one. A few of these older maidens look up against it, so this may boil down to whether the favourite is as straightforward as he appears.

Top Selections

1. Res Ipsa – 1/2 with Betfair

Jockey: Colin Keane | Trainer: G M Lyons | Form: 6-2 | Rating: 86 | Topspeed: 63

He’s the obvious one, but sometimes the obvious one is still the right one. Res Ipsa improved sharply from his debut sixth when finishing second on his return, and that effort gives him a sizeable edge in a race where most of these are either modest, unproven or both. An 86 rating in this company is a serious marker, and the Colin Keane/G M Lyons combination is not one to ignore in an ordinary maiden. Drawn wide in 14 isn’t ideal around here, but over a mile he should have time to get organised. At 1/2 he’s no hidden gem, just the horse with the standout chance. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Camino Lad – 8/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Gary Carroll | Trainer: G M Lyons | Form: | Rating: | Topspeed:

If you’re looking beyond the favourite for an each-way angle, Camino Lad makes more appeal than most. He comes from the same Lyons yard as the jolly, has a sensible middle draw in stall 4, and the market has him respected enough at around 8/1 in a field full of exposed sorts and ragged form figures. There’s always a leap of faith involved with a debutant, but this is not a maiden packed with depth and it wouldn’t take a superstar performance to hit the frame. With Gary Carroll booked, he looks the one most likely to outrun his inexperience and give each-way backers a run. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Keep it simple: Res Ipsa is hard to oppose on the figures and the recent form, so he’s the straight win play despite the short price. For those wanting a bit more juice, Camino Lad appeals as the each-way punt in a race lacking depth behind the favourite. The obvious danger is I Carry You Home, while Shorten The Winter is worth a market check on debut.

18:20 – Jim Ryan Racecourse Services Memorial Handicap

Race Details: 1m | | Going: GOOD TO YIELDING | | flat

This is a proper little mile handicap rather than a penalty kick, with the progressive 3yo Monvoe taking on some battle-hardened older handicappers. He’s the obvious starting point after a very solid sequence, but this isn’t a weak race and he won’t get anything easy from the likes of Earls, Fast Tara and the returning Royal Saxo, who signed off last season in fine order. Noli Timere has the class to get involved if bouncing back, while Pierre Royal is another with enough ability to make his presence felt from a handy draw. The shape of the race could be tactical enough over this mile, and at Limerick that usually means track position and timing matter plenty. Tricky, yes, but not impossible to solve.

Top Selections

1. Monvoe – 3/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Reese Holohan | Trainer: R P Cody | Form: 22-112 | Rating: 92 | Topspeed: 85

Monvoe is the one with momentum, and in these mixed-age handicaps I’m always interested when a 3yo arrives still going the right way. His recent form figures of 22-112 read very well in the context of this race, and that topspeed mark of 85 is the best in the field. He’s still only rated 92, yet gets in here with just 122, which gives him a clear weights angle against some exposed older rivals. The draw in 8 is workable enough, and if Reese Holohan can get him settled before asking him to quicken, he looks the most likely winner. At 3/1, he’s short enough but still hard to oppose.

Bet: WIN

2. Royal Saxo – 6/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Robbie Colgan | Trainer: A J Martin | Form: 15212- | Rating: 95 | Topspeed:

Royal Saxo appeals as the each-way play because his profile is solid, uncomplicated and probably a touch underappreciated after a break. He ended last season with form figures of 15212, which says he turned up and ran his race time after time, and a mark of 95 doesn’t look beyond him if he returns in the same nick. A J Martin knows exactly how to place this type, and Robbie Colgan is a good booking for a race where composure will matter. He may not have Monvoe’s scope, but at 6/1 he looks the value alternative if fitness is there from the outset.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Monvoe is the win bet because he brings the strongest progressive profile, the best topspeed figure and a very attractive racing weight. For cover, Royal Saxo makes plenty of each-way appeal at 6/1 given how reliable he was at the end of last year. Earls is the obvious danger after his recent second, while Fast Tara also has claims if getting the race run to suit.

18:50 – Twilight Summer Racing @ Limerick Handicap

Race Details: 1m | | Going: GOOD TO YIELDING | | flat

This is a proper big-field mile handicap, the sort where a clean passage and a sensible draw can matter every bit as much as raw ability. Ohmali brings the most obvious recent piece of form after finishing second on her return, while Jasmine Affanalis arrives in similar shape and looks well positioned to strike again off 73. Mythical Rock is another with a live chance if forgiven a lesser latest run, and Hexagonal has been knocking on the door often enough to be on any shortlist. There are old hands like Out On Friday and Notforalongtime who know how to be competitive in these races, but this doesn’t look the strongest handicap for the grade and that makes it a race where a progressive or well-treated sort could easily take charge.

Top Selections

1. Jasmine Affanalis – 9/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Luke McAteer | Trainer: David Marnane | Form: 1-0752 | Rating: 73 | Topspeed: 69

She looks to have been building back towards another win and that latest second catches the eye in this company. The earlier 0-7-5 sequence was a bit flat, but there was much more encouragement last time and she now gets to race off a mark only 1lb higher than her last winning figure. Draw 3 is a definite plus in a 19-runner mile handicap around here, and Luke McAteer should be able to get her into a handy stalking position rather than conceding ground. At 9/2 she is not exactly hidden, but she still makes plenty of appeal as one who comes here in the right form and from a workable mark. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Hexagonal – 8/1 with Bet365

Jockey: J M Sheridan | Trainer: Denis Gerard Hogan | Form: 0-7824 | Rating: 75 | Topspeed: 55

Hexagonal is not the flashiest profile in the race, but he does look solid enough for an each-way play in a contest paying five places. His last three runs read well for a handicap like this: second, fourth and fourth, which tells you he is holding his form and giving himself a chance. Stall 10 is fine, the mark of 75 is workable, and Hogan’s horses are rarely shy about getting involved in these competitive Irish handicaps. He may not have the upside of one or two younger rivals, but he is dependable and the 8/1 on offer gives him a bit of each-way substance in a race where plenty arrive with questions to answer. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Jasmine Affanalis is the win play here, with her recent revival, handy draw and fair mark making her the most convincing option. Hexagonal is the each-way punt in a race with five places on offer, because he keeps running his race and should be thereabouts again. Ohmali is the obvious danger, while Mythical Rock and Out On Friday also have enough about them to get involved.

19:20 – Cosgrave Transport Handicap (Div I)

Race Details: 7f | | Going: GOOD TO YIELDING | | flat

This looks a very ordinary 7f handicap on paper, but that usually means there is still money to be made if you latch onto the right recent run. James Henry brings the most solid current form after his recent third and stall 1 should suit a prominent ride, while Beau Army is one of the more interesting younger legs in the field after shaping well enough in similar company. Shelbourne Flyer has Colin Keane booked and is impossible to dismiss if ready after an absence, while Imnotleavinyou has enough 3yo form to get involved despite a slightly messy latest effort. Verhoyen and Linger For Longer are the sort to run into the places without being bombproof. In truth, this is more tricky puzzle than strong race, and a bit of tactical luck could decide it.

Top Selections

1. James Henry – 4/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Gavin Ryan | Trainer: Eoin Christopher McCarthy | Form: 0783-3 | Rating: 64 | Topspeed: 63

James Henry looks the percentage call in a race lacking depth. He returned with a solid third after a break, and that run suggested the old ability is still there for a yard that does well enough when placing them realistically. He has the inside draw in stall 1, a workable mark of 64, and his topspeed figure stacks up perfectly well against this lot. In a contest full of runners with questions attached, he is one of the few arriving here off an effort that reads positively rather than hopefully. Available at 4/1, he makes plenty of appeal as the one to beat. Bet type: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Beau Army – 11/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Chris Hayes | Trainer: Adrian McGuinness | Form: 666204 | Rating: 56 | Topspeed: 52

Beau Army is the each-way play because he brings a bit more upside than plenty of exposed older rivals. His recent form is not flashy, but that second two starts ago and his latest fourth suggest he is beginning to find his level in handicaps. Chris Hayes is a notable booking in this grade, and a mark of 56 gives this 3yo room to be competitive if he gets a decent tow into the race from stall 4. He does not need to improve dramatically to hit the frame, and at 11/2 he looks a fair each-way punt with four places on offer. Bet type: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

James Henry is the win bet, simply because he arrives with the cleanest recent piece of form and has the draw to make life easier. Beau Army is the each-way option, with youth and a lenient-looking mark giving him solid place claims. The main dangers are Shelbourne Flyer if fully tuned up after time off, and Imnotleavinyou if bouncing back from a disappointing latest run.

19:50 – Cosgrave Transport Handicap (Div II)

Race Details: 7f | | Going: GOOD TO YIELDING | | flat

This looks the usual Limerick handicap puzzle: plenty with bits and pieces of form, not many arriving in rampant nick, and a draw over 7f that could matter if they stack up early. Zabriskie Point has been knocking on the door and is the obvious recent-form horse, while Dinamine is dangerously well treated on old figures if bouncing back from a quiet reappearance. The 3yos Concaire, Queen Of Newark and Unfamiliar add a bit of intrigue getting in low at the weights, though none come here bombproof. Exceeding is another with a recent win on the page, but this is a race where consistency may count for more than brilliance. It is not a strong contest, but it is a trappy one, and that usually makes solid handicap form worth following.

Top Selections

1. Zabriskie Point – 5/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Sam Coen | Trainer: Adrian McGuinness | Form: 983525 | Rating: 66 | Topspeed: 56

He is hardly hiding from the assessor, but Zabriskie Point makes plenty of appeal in a race full of doubts. Those recent figures tell the story of a horse running his race time and again, and his latest fifth was another honest effort rather than a sign he is going backwards. Adrian McGuinness runners are often busy in these handicaps and this one looks set to be competitive again from a workable mark. Stall 12 is not ideal, but if Sam Coen can get him into a decent rhythm, he should be finishing better than most. At 5/1, he looks the percentage call in a race lacking depth. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Run Forrest Run – 10/1 with Paddy Power

Jockey: Leigh Roche | Trainer: Laura Hourigan | Form: 7680-7 | Rating: 63 | Topspeed: 76

This veteran is not one for maximum faith, but there is enough here to suggest he could outrun double-figure odds. His recent form figures do not leap off the page, yet that standout topspeed number of 76 says he retains more ability than the bare form implies, and he is now down to a very tempting racing weight. Draw 4 should allow Leigh Roche to hold a handy pitch if the horse breaks cleanly, and in a race where plenty have little margin for error, that counts. He does not need to be a world-beater to hit the frame and 10/1 makes him a fair each-way punt in a 14-runner handicap paying four places. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Zabriskie Point is the solid win play because he brings the most reliable recent handicap form into a race short on certainty. For an each-way alternative, Run Forrest Run is worth chancing at the prices with four places on offer. Dinamine and Concaire look the main dangers if returning to their best, while Unfamiliar is another who would not shock if the market speaks in his favour.

20:20 – Racing Again On June 19th Handicap

Race Details: 2m 1f | | Going: GOOD TO YIELDING | | flat

This is a proper end-of-card staying handicap and, with 16 runners and five places on offer, it looks the sort of race where punters will be tempted to spread the net. The market is centred on the lightly weighted pair Our Lucky Lady and Nod Of Approval, and both arrive with the right kind of recent form for a race of this nature. Miss Australie comes here on the back of a win, while Lauderdale King shaped well when placed last time and is another with a workable profile. There are a few exposed types in here, and a few who still have questions to answer at this trip, so I’d be leaning towards the progressive or unexposed stayers rather than the old hands. Tricky enough, but not impossible to unpick.

Top Selections

1. Nod Of Approval – 3/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Shane Foley | Trainer: Mrs John Harrington | Form: 055-62 | Rating: 67 | Topspeed: 39

The obvious starting point is Nod Of Approval, who looks very much like a 3yo going the right way in a race full of older, more exposed stayers. He was beaten only narrowly when second last time and that effort suggested this sort of trip is bringing out improvement. Off just 67, he gets in here with a feather weight and that can be a major asset in a slog over 2m1f, even on this ground. Shane Foley is a notable booking and Harrington’s runner has fewer miles on the clock than most of these. At 3/1 he is no secret, but he still makes plenty of appeal and is hard to oppose.

Bet: WIN

2. Lauderdale King – 10/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Ben Coen | Trainer: Andrew Slattery | Form: 80-03 | Rating: 74 | Topspeed: 68

Lauderdale King looks the each-way value in a race where a lot of these have shown their hand already. His latest third was a step back in the right direction and, importantly, he posted one of the better Topspeed figures in the field with 68. That suggests he has the engine to be seriously involved if this turns into a proper stamina test. Draw 16 is not ideal, but over this trip there is time to find a position, and Ben Coen is the sort of rider you want in a race that may need to be judged rather than forced. At 10/1, he looks a solid each-way punt with scope to do better again.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Nod Of Approval is the win play because he has the profile of a progressive stayer and arrives off the strongest recent piece of form. For an each-way angle, Lauderdale King makes plenty of sense at double-figure odds with five places available. The obvious dangers are Our Lucky Lady, who is respected after winning last time, and Miss Australie, another coming here in form.
