Newbury Racing Tips (Saturday 16 May 2026)
A bumper eight-race card gets under way at 1.25pm, with the final race taking place at 5.40pm. Here are Steve’s best bets for the action at the Berkshire track…
1.25 Newbury – Kalpana (1pt win – 11/10)
Andrew Balding’s stable have been in sensational form this season and one of his star performers, Kalpana, will make her seasonal reappearance in the Group 3 Aston Park Stakes at 1.25pm. A Group 1-winning mare, she showed when winning the Fillies & Mares Stakes at Ascot that she is a real top-class performer on her day. She goes carry a penalty here, but should be far too good. The likes of French Master and Arabian Force are smart, but not in the same league as Kalpana. Whilst the Balding team will have higher hopes for her later on in the season, she can use this as a springboard to Group 1 company again, and she can outclass her rivals.
2.35 Newbury – Damysus (1pt win – 3/1)
Having won the last two renewals of the Lockinge Stakes, John & Thady Gosden are bidding for the hat-trick in the Newbury Group 1 at 2.35pm. They will unleash Damysus and the five-year-old can duly land the three-timer. A fine winner of the Earl Of Sefton Stakes at Newmarket last month, the drop back to a mile shouldn’t pose a big problem here. He showed a fine turn of foot that day, and a repeat of that effort should see him land this event. The likes of Notable Speech and More Thunder are the main dangers. However, Damysus has race fitness on his side, which can prove crucial late on.
3.45 Newbury – Al Azd (1pt win – 5/1)
A race steeped in history with some fine winners to have claimed victory in the race, the London Gold Cup Handicap is another cracking renewal on Saturday. Roger Varian’s Al Azd can be the latest three-year-old to etch his name on the roll of honour in the 3.45pm race. A maiden winner at Southwell, he then built on that effort with a facile success at Doncaster. The Dubawi gelding was handed a 7lbs rise for that victory, but that may not be enough to stop him landing the hat-trick. He runs off a figure of 92 and the hugely exciting middle distance performer can make a mockery of that and down the likes of Port Of Spain and Lost Boys, who both look smart in their own right.
Newmarket Racing Tips (Saturday 16 May 2026)
Seven races take place at Newmarket on Saturday, with a 1.42pm start. Steve’s sole selection at Flat HQ runs in the competitive 2.50pm contest.
2.50 Newmarket – Golden Redemption (1pt win – 4/1)
Andrew Balding’s Golden Redemption was no match for Billyjoh last time out at Newmarket, but should continue his improvement. Impeded in the closing stages of that contest, he will need to deal with a 2lbs rise here. However, he’s shown to be really consistent over the last few seasons and he looks capable of landing this event. Not out the first three in his last seven starts, he’s one that could just find enough to win a race of this nature and with the Balding string in flying form then he can storm to victory.
