5.17 Newbury – Secret Rival (0.5pt e/w – 11/1 bet365 & William Hill)
Ed Walker’s Secret Rival wouldn’t look an obvious bet after her 16-1 eighth of nine at Chepstow on her debut earlier this month, but the soft ground wouldn’t have been ideal for this Ardad filly and her yard’s juveniles usually improve considerable for their initial outing. She was a shade keen/green that day, and wasn’t given a hard time after becoming outpaced. Backing her trainer’s second time out two-year-olds is profitable angle thanks to 57 winners from 332 bets (17.2% strike-rate, +£66.41 at Betfair SP after 2% commission) and this system has found two winners (20-1 and 5-2) from just five previous qualifiers this year. The step up to 6f will help and she makes each-way appeal against short-priced pair Wateera and Big Hitter.
Newton Abbot Racing Tips (Tuesday 23 June 2026)

Since the beginning of 2010, Paul Nicholls has a 32 from 136 record with his chasers in first-time cheekpieces (23.5%, +£45.14 to a £1 level stale at SP, +£78.08 at Betfair SP) and Jetty May gets the headgear in this 3m2f 0-100 handicap. The six-year-old won here over hurdles in May on her second run following a wind operation and wasn’t disgraced in finishing fourth at Bangor last time. Runner-up in her sole point-to-point, she makes her Rules chase debut today and the switch to fences, longer trip and addition of headgear could also bring about improvement.
