A bumper eight horse racing fixtures take place in the UK & Ireland on Friday 17th July. Steve Chambers focuses on two afternoon flat meetings from Newbury and Nottingham, as he picks out his best bets to make up the Lucky 15 for the day.
Newbury Tips (Friday 17th July 2026)
There are only six races at Newbury, with a 3.00pm start. The feature race on the card is the listed Rose Bowl Stakes at 4.10pm, and that contest features amongst our best bets.
4.10 Newbury – Nabati (1pt win – 7/4)
A comfortable one-and-a-quarter length winner on his first start at Yarmouth, Charlie Appleby’s Nabati shaped like he could be the latest smart juvenile production from Ballydoyle. Now stepping up to listed company the Godolphin raider will need to build on that Yarmouth win. The Night Of Thunder colt will face some notable rivals in this listed event at 4.10pm, but he does hold a Group 2 entry for the Gimcrack Stakes at York next month, so connections must hold him in high regard. Sale Shark and Social Symbol could prove to be the biggest dangers.
4.45 Newbury – Pierpoint (1pt win – 20/1)
A decent performance when fourth at Ascot on her second start, Pierpoint struggled next time out at Newbury. That Newbury loss came in softish ground, so a return to a quicker surface on Friday in the 4.45pm could see improvement. Richard Hannon’s charge takes his chance in handicaps for the first time and the son of Palace Pier could prove to be better than his opening mark of 75. He will face a host of improvers in this event, but he could well put up a career best and land the prize.
5.20 Newbury – Koala Rose (1pt win – 15/8)
Only four fillies line up for the 1m 5f 61y marathon at 5.20pm and three of that field head into the event with wins on their CV. The one that doesn’t is Ralph Beckett’s Koala Rose, but she can break her duck in this event and land a first career win. Whilst her rivals could find themselves in the handicapper’s grip, Koala Rose is still unexposed and having finished second in a Goodwood maiden last time out then she can score here. Given a mark of 78, the daughter of Australia has already shown she can excel over this trip when second over 1m 6f last time out, and she can duly use that as a springboard to victory here.
Nottingham Racing Tips (Thursday 16th July 2026)
It’s a 2.22pm start at Nottingham for their six-race card. We complete the GG Lucky 15 for Friday with a solitary selection in the final race at 5.10pm.
5.10 Nottingham – Goldie Trickett (1pt win – 3/1)
Jane Chapple-Hyam’s Goldie Trickett will drop into Class 6 company in the 5.10pm at Nottingham. Dropped 1lb following a fourth placed finish at Leicester, the four-year-old daughter of New Bay can relish the drop in grade and claim a first career win. She’s not been running bad of late, but has been struggling to grab victory. So, a drop down in grade should see her be more challenging and she can down the veteran Revich, who looks the main rival.
