It’s Northumberland Plate day at Newcastle on Saturday 27th June and the big event is off at 3.15pm. Andrew Mount has an each-way selection for the big marathon contest, while he also heads to York for some tips as well.
Newcastle Racing Tips (Saturday 27 June 2026)
Seven races get under way at 1.40pm, with the feature at 3.15pm. Check out Andrew’s best bets at the north east track.
1.40 Newcastle – Rajeko (0.5pt e/w – 33/1 generally)
Four-year-old geldings have a cracking record in this 7f Class 2 handicap, landing seven of the eight renewals since 2017 from just 25 runners for a profit of £16.50 to a £1 level stake at SP (+£23.07 at Betfair SP). Several of the beaten horses hit the frame, including three seconds, four thirds and a trio of fourths. Michael Bell’s Rajeko qualifies on this angle, and he could improve for a gelding operation since finishing down the field in Dubai back in February. The yard’s handicappers are 26 from 91 on the back of a gelding operation for a profit of £46.38 to a £1 level stake at SP. The return to the all-weather could also help as his three runs on synthetics have a produced a novice win, a Listed race second and unplaced effort in handicap company when struggling to see out 1m at Southwell. I’ve saved on Tremolo, another four-year-old gelding, and will also play the pair in exotics with Brighton Boy and Supido, the other qualifiers..
2.10 Newcastle – Zoum Zoum (0.5pt e/w – 20/1 bet365, Paddy Power and William Hill, all paying first four. Sky Bet are 22/1 but only three places)
Zoum Zoum hasn’t had his preferred soft going since a solid second in the Listed Wentworth Stakes at Doncaster last October, but he looks interesting for the Group 3 Chipchase Stakes on his return to the all-weather. Ralph Beckett’s five-year-old was an 8-1 Kempton winner on his racecourse debut back in October 2023 and his sole subsequent all-weather outing saw him finish second in a 6f Listed contest at Southwell in November. The quick ground was to blame for a poor effort at Salisbury last time and he’s worth a speculative each-way interest.
3.15 Newcastle – Synergism (0.5pt e/w – 14/1 generally)
Nine of the last ten winners of the Northumberland Plate ran first or second in their prep race and backing all 54 qualifiers returned a profit of £69.00 to a £1 level stake at SP (+£113.08 at Betfair SP after 2% commission). Last year’s sole qualifier Spirit Mixer won at 25-1. This year’s qualifiers are Sir Mark Prescott’s Synergism and Alan King’s mare Blazeon Five. All nine winners were geldings which swings me towards the Prescott runner. He tends to race a little closer to the early pace than typical Plate winners but with the track riding slow thanks to the extreme heat, that shouldn’t be an issue. When it’s this hot the wax that binds the Tapeta surface together melts, turning it dry/powdery and creating more kickback, which makes it hard for the closers (that was certainly the case here on Thursday afternoon). His record in all-weather handicap reads 11123 (3-5) and he’s worth a small each-way dabble. I’ll save on Blazeon Five and Team Player, who ran well against the bias in the Chester Cup.
York Racing Tips (Saturday 27 June 2026)
York begin their seven-race card at 1.20pm and Andrew has a brace of picks for the sprint contest at 2.25pm.
2.25 York – Fortification (1pt e/w – 9/2 generally, Sky Bet paying five places) & Stargazed (10/1 in a place, 9/1 generally, including Sky Bet)
Fortification and Stargazed clashed over course and distance at the Dante meeting in May with the former prevailing by half a length. The key to that race was the strong pace set by a trio of front-runners/pressers – Naana’s Shadow, She’s Got A Bother and Hanney Girlm who finished third, fourth and fifth respectively. The five of them do battle again today and I’m hoping/expecting a similar pace set-up. Fortification has been beaten twice since but ran with credit on each occasion, finishing fourth of 16 (C&D) and a 14-1 third of 22 over 6f here when doing best of the closers. He’ll be hard to keep out of the frame again.
Stargazed has only raced once since York, finishing 12th of 27 in the Palace Of Holyrood House at Royal Ascot, a respectable enough effort given that he raced down the centre of the track as opposed to the favoured near side rail.
