At Newmarket’s Craven meeting, Andrew’s selection runs in a competitive renewal of the Group 3 Abernant Stakes.
3.00 Newmarket – Washington Heights (1pt each-way – 11/1 bet365, four places, 10/1 Betfred, four places)
Kevin Ryan targets the Group 3 Abernant Stakes, recording form figures of 11113312 (5-8) since 2014 for a profit of £42.75 to a £1 level stake at SP. Washington Heights contributed the majority of that profit figure when landing the 2024 renewal at odds of 33-1 and is back for another go after missing the 2025 running when Ryan saddled 11-1 shot Grand grey to finish second. Washington Heights was campaigned exclusively at 5f last term and, though scoring in Listed company at York in the summer, he seemed to find that trip too sharp when fourth here at the Guineas meeting, never striking a blow at the leaders in a four-length fourth. His full record over today’s course and distance stands at 221 (1-3) and he holds each-way claims in a race that should be run to suit. With the stalls in the centre today, stall 6 should be fine and he can sit on the heels of likely leader Quinault before pouncing late. That rival is four from four over this 6f trip at Newmarket (two on the Rowley Mile and two on the July Course) and is worth a saver as well as playing in a reversed forecast with the selection.
Hereford Racing Tips (Thursday 16 April)
Hereford hosts seven races through to Thursday evening. In the feature class 3 handicap, Andrew has two selections worth backing.
6.00 Hereford – Sherborne (1pt win – 15/8 bet365, 7-4 generally) & Insurrection (1pt win – 7/2 888sport, 100-30 generally)
Since his first bout of wind surgery in 2023, Sherborne has recorded form figures in the spring (March to May) of 11241P11 (5-8) for a profit of £14.13 to a £1 level stake at SP, including form figures on right-handed or figure-of-8 tracks of 2111 (3-4), with the defeat by a neck. He clocked a very fast time for the grade and received a sectionals upgrade when romping home at Ascot last time and can go well again.
Paul Nicholls’ Insurrection is 0-5 on left-handed tracks, beating only 43.2% of his rivals, but is three from ten in today’s direction (+£1.32 to a £1 level stake at SP), beating 59.3% of his opponents. In Class 3 or lower company his right-handed record stands at 1311 (3-4) and the application of first-time cheekpieces could bring about improvement. Since the beginning of 2010, his trainer is 32 from 135 (23.7%) with his chase runners in this headgear for a profit of £46.14 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 23.47, A/E = 1.36). The nine-year-old finished down the field on his latest start but that was when 66-1 for the Kim Muir at left-handed Cheltenham and he drops down from Class 2 to Class 3 level.
